“Art And Me” Students To Exhibit Work

April 26, 2013

kaf“Art & Me” is an education outreach initiative aimed at our island’s school children that involves the Bermuda Education Network [BEN] and Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation [KAF].

Launched in 2010, the project uses the visual arts and Harvard University’s “Artful Thinking” programme to enhance learning across the upper primary school curriculum.

The Edinburgh Gallery at the Bermuda Society of Arts [BSoA] is showcasing a collection of work from students at West Pembroke, Victor Scott Primary, Dellwood Middle Schools and KAFs Spring camp who participated in the “Art and Me” programme at a new show which opens this evening [Apr 26] at 5pm.  The exhibit will run at the City Hall gallery until May 14.

“Art & Me” lessons introduce children to a wide range of art materials, themes and artists and use the ‘See How I Think I Wonder’ technique, which is part of the Artful Thinking methodology developed by Harvard’s Project Zero.

“This exceptional curriculum develops art appreciation and critical thinking as well as practical art skills,” said a Art & Me spokesperson.

“Art & Me” teachers instruct the children how to look carefully at a picture or object and to articulate what they see and what they do not understand.

“Children discover that thoughtful questioning is an important step towards understanding,” said the spokesperson. “These skills may be applied by the child back in the classroom across the whole school curriculum.

“In addition to nurturing the individual child’s artistic skills and creativity, Art & Me promotes inquiry-based learning strategies and increases connections between school educators and art organisations.”

“Art & Me Programme” welcomes the opportunity to have new schools join the programme so students’ creative and critical thinking can be improved through the arts. The programme seeks funding from the public and private sectors throughout the year.

All contributions are welcome. If you are interested in joining this effort please contact Fiona Rodriguez-Roberts at education@kaf.bm or 542-9000.
