Cricket Players Attend Four-Day Easter Clinic

April 6, 2013

DSC_1457The BCB National Academy U19 Squad has completed a four-day clinic run by National Coach, David Moore, and supported by the XL Foundation and the Bank of Bermuda Foundation.

National Coach, David Moore, elaborated on the training program, “The clinic had a strong skills-based focus in which players concentrated on improving their technical skills. Players worked very hard on blocked skill drills, bowling machine activities and open net sessions.

“There was also a fitness component to the clinic in which the players undertook a wide variety of tests to enable the further development of individualized fitness programs. The clinic was part of the pre-tournament preparation for the U19 World Cup qualifier scheduled in Toronto, July 2013. As part of the comprehensive preparation plan, the squad will compete in the domestic league to give them valuable match experience prior to the event.”

The players took part in a community service initiative which involved using their peer mentorship skills and running drills at a St. Davids Primary and St. Davids Cricket Club Easter Camp. Alex Dore, a member of the National Academy since he was 12, spoke to the young cricketers about his experiences representing Bermuda at the international level.

He told them about what it is like to compete overseas and how proud he is to represent his country playing at such a competitive level. Alex also highlighted how important it is to respect, listen and learn from coaches and mentors, to train hard and stay focused on what they want to achieve.

Lloyd Fray, President of the BCB stated, “On behalf of the Board I would like to thank the XL Foundation and the Bank of Bermuda Foundation for their continued support of our National Academy.

“The BCB National Academy Program has been designed to provide elite young cricketers of Bermuda the opportunity to develop life skills and cricket skills, knowledge and understanding to enhance their performance and provide opportunities for them to play at a first class or International level.”

“With assistance from YouthNet, a large component of our program is to teach the older players to become Peer Mentors to the younger players in the Academy.

“Youth Mentoring is extremely important because it teaches our young men how to be responsible role models. It is really important to give our players the opportunity volunteer their time in the community and share their experiences with others.”
