Cycle For A Good Cause: Cycle For Change

April 5, 2013

Spring is the time for Family Centre’s Cycle for Change event. The family cycling event will take place on Saturday, April 13th starting at 10am from the Evangelical Church on Mission Road in Paget [near Modern Mart]. The route follows the Bermuda Railway Trail from Harmony Hall to Somerset Bridge and back at a leisurely pace.

“We try to hold events that bring families together for quality time,” says Family Centre Executive Director, Martha Dismont. “We first held the Cycle for Change in November 2012 and we were joined by families, school groups and groups of friends who came out and enjoyed a pleasant a ride on the Railway Trail to Somerset Bridge.

“Members of the Fat Tire Massive cycling club embraced our 2012 event and made a big difference in fundraising-with two of their members coming forward as our prize winners. The funds raised have helped Family Centre respond to families in need with therapeutic services.”

Cycle for Change is a family oriented cycling event that encourages quality family time and healthy living. This event promotes the importance of wellness through exercise and encourages families to spend time together. It also highlights the tranquil beauty of Bermuda’s Railway Trail.

Chris Roque and his son, Cristian participated in the last two fundraising cycle events on behalf of the Family Centre and he said “Cristian and I had a blast on the last rides and he was very excited to help raise money for the charity. We plan to ride again and bring more friends from the Fat Tire Massive cycling association”.

This Cycle for Change event is sanctioned as a practice ride for the upcoming Catlin Middle-to-End that takes place on Saturday, May 4, from Elbow Beach Resort.

Mrs. Dismont stated, “We are very excited that our event has been sanctioned as practice for Catlin’s Middle to End, which has been an invaluable support to our cause over the years.” She added, “We are also excited to have Family Centre Board members and international members of the Friends of Family Centre organization here to participate.”

Linda Keyes is traveling from Boston to take part in the event as a way to “support the Family Centre charity while enjoying the countryside and spring weather while taking a respite from the golf course”.

A registration fee of $20 per person supports the charity and includes a backpack and t-shirt. Family Centre hopes that each cyclist/family will make an effort to raise at least $50 in pledges on top of the registration fee. Pledge sheets are available and every cyclist that raises $100 or more in pledges will have their name entered into a draw for great prizes.

Road marshals will be present throughout the ride, as well as water stops, restrooms and lemonade refreshments with musical entertainment at the water’s edge [turnaround point] at Somerset Bridge Park.

The Spring Cycle for Change is supported by Winner’s Edge, Bicycle Works, PowerAde, the Bermuda Parks Department, Pure Water, and Freisenbruch Meyer.

Registration/Pledge forms are available from Bicycle works, Family Centre or downloaded from www.bermudaendtoend.bm or email cycleforchange@tfc.prevention.bm to have one emailed. For questions or more information, call 232-1116 to Roberta Wolfe.
