Google Bringing Android To Automobiles

January 11, 2014

android-iconGoogle has formed a group called the Open Auto Alliance [OAA], consisting of the web giant and car manufacturers General Motors, Hyundai, Audi, and Honda, along with graphics chip maker Nvidia, as it prepares to introduce its Android operating system to vehicles this year.

Android will bring app support, openness, and customization to the auto industry, promising to “drive innovation, and make technology in the car safer and more intuitive for everyone” according to a statement from the group.

The statement goes on to say that, “The OAA is aimed at accelerating auto innovation with an approach that offers openness, customization, and scale, key tenets that have already made Android a familiar part of millions of people’s lives.

“This open development model and common platform will allow automakers to more easily bring cutting-edge technology to their drivers, and create new opportunities for developers to deliver powerful experiences for drivers and passengers in a safe and scalable way.”

The idea of the “connected car” isn’t a new one, but the OAA hopes to make the vision a reality for the average consumer by the end of 2014.

“OAA members share a vision for the connected car, and bringing these open standards of innovation to the market will help extend people’s mobile experience seamlessly to another platform they already know and love.

“Timing from each automaker will vary, but you can expect to see the first cars with Android integration by the end of this year.”

While this endeavor represents the largest push of any technology company into the automobile sector to date, Google isn’t the first firm to make the attempt.

According to a report in CNET, Apple is currently working on integrating its iOS operating system with car electronics, while Ford’s ongoing partnership with Microsoft has already seen the introduction of its Sync technology.
