Swedish Pair Back On Land After Boat Rescue

March 12, 2014

Two Swedish nationals are safely on land in Delaware after being rescued at sea about 100 nautical miles off Bermuda a few days ago.

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre previously said that the sailing vessel “Bull” — en-route to St Georges from Florida — got into difficulty around 100 nautical miles to the south-west of Bermuda.

The 33ft vessel, with two persons on board, began to take on water and activated an emergency signal. A cargo ship was re-routed to assist the stricken vessel, while the US Coastguard also dispatched an aircraft to the area.

The merchant vessel “Crown Sapphire” arrived on scene a short while later but was unable to dispatch a life boat due to rough seas, however both persons were rescued without serious injury as they scaled a cargo net onto the ships deck to safety above.

Delaware Online reports that professional skydiver Niklas Carlberg, 35, of Visby, Sweden, and his companion Karin Wiger, 24, of Växjö, Sweden, were safely transported to Wilmington, Delaware.

They recounted their ordeal, saying that they were in rough waters when the boat began to take on water.

“We’d been taking on water for four days,” Carlberg said. “So we really hadn’t slept in about three days,” he said.

They still ate a little, the report said. “Lots of Snickers,” Carlberg said, “And one night I made ravioli, but we had to eat it out of cans as the ship tossed.”
