Bermuda Win Noel-Simmons Memorial Trophy

rugby140419The Bermuda Under 16 rugby team won the Devrae Noel-Simmons Memorial Trophy after defeating the Trinity College Under 16 team at the Somersfield Academy School Field yesterday [Apr 19].

The Bermuda team dominated the match from start to finish winning 19 – 0. Bermuda got tries from Jonathan Alves, Jahniko Francis and Padraic O’Shaughnessy, while O’Shaughnessy also kicked 2 conversions.

The Trinity Under 14 team defeated the Bermuda Under 14 team 32 – 26. Trinity got 2 tries from Jadah Hallnah and Ian MacLean, while Owen Chesney and Shiomave Petevs added a try each.

Padraic O’Shaughnessy and Kelin Williams both scored 2 tries each for the Bermuda Under 14 team, with O’Shaughnessy kicking 3 conversions.

Leaide defeated the Bermuda Under 17 team 15 – 0, with Leaside getting tries from Spencer Allen, Devin Dunn and Reid Goodman.

Trinity College School rugby team has been coming to Bermuda every year since 2011, and this year they presented a new trophy — the Devrae Noel-Simmons Memorial Trophy — in honour of Mr. Noel-Simmons who passed away earlier this year.

The fitness trainer and rugby aficionado was instrumental in training and organizing the Bermuda youth sides that matched up against the Trinity College School for the past few years.

As a mark of respect to the late Mr. Noel-Simmons, a Cedar tree was planted at Somerfield after the tournament on Saturday.

    Well done to Bermuda rugby….great to see the youth rugby program not only succeeding in developing young players but also bringing sports tourist to our beloved island. A touching tribute to our delay departed friend Devrae…he would be very proud of the kids.
