Chicago Not Windy Enough For America’s Cup

July 10, 2014

According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago was taken out of contention to host the 2017 America’s Cup as there was concern the location would not produce race-quality breezes on a consistent basis.

Earlier this week the organisers had announced that the shortlist for potential hosts was down to two, with Bermuda shortlisted alongside San Diego. This was down from the original shortlist of four [Bermuda, Chicago, San Diego and San Francisco]  which was announced in May of this year.

“Both Bermuda and San Diego have made very compelling cases to be the host for the next America’s Cup,” said Russell Coutts, Director of the America’s Cup Event Authority [ACEA]. “We will be in good hands with either venue.”

Speaking after the announcement that the island was one of two locations shortlisted, Premier Michael Dunkley said, “The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport, predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years.

“The event was last hosted by San Francisco in September 2013 and was won by the Oracle Team USA. The finals included a series of races over a period of three months.

“If Bermuda is ultimately successful it has the opportunity of being a milestone, spectacular event for our island. It will highlight Bermuda’s legacy as a maritime sailing destination and give us unprecedented international exposure.

“Hosting an event of this magnitude on Bermuda’s shores will require the support and participation from all spheres of our community. It will require a unified effort from everyone.

“The benefit potential for Bermuda is something that we should all be cognizant of, and I very much look forward to joining with all of Bermuda in showcasing our hospitality to the world,” added the Premier.

According to the event website, the host city for the next America’s Cup will be announced before the end of this year.

In order to maintain a level playing field.

The race should be held at a neutral country.

We know and they know that Bermuda is ideally located.

Its not the oldest but one of the oldest trophies in international sport. The Motocross Des Nations Chamberlain Trophy is 67 years old. That’s the Olympics of motocross.

Irregardless of who’s “the oldest” this will not go down well with them that see an Opposition like the Progressive Labour Party opposing every damn thing that can help ALL Bermudians regain a semblance of normality. They’ve become a real “stick in the spokes of the wheel of progress” :-(
