PLP: Condolences On Passing Of Dr. Shija

Dr Shija 2011The Progressive Labour Party said they are “deeply saddened” to learn of the sudden passing of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Secretary General Dr. William Shija in London, England.

Dr. Shija was well known worldwide, especially throughout the Commonwealth and he had a fond affection for Bermuda.

Deputy Opposition Leader, Derrick Burgess said, “Our prayers go out to the family, friends, CPA colleagues of Dr. William Shija ‎and the people of Tanzania.”

“Dr. Shija as Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, held an important position within the commonwealth that we valued and he formed many meaningful relationships globally. ‎

“In fact, our first Premier Dame Jennifer Smith, once served on the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association board and our party has long respected the role that the CPA and value the significance of the post held by Dr. William Shija.”

“Personally, my association with Tanzania dates back to 1999 when the Bermuda delegation at the CPA Plenary in Trinidad led by Hon. Arthur Hodgson with delegates consisting of former Opposition [Senate] Leader Kim Swan and myself campaigned on behalf of and supported Pius Msekwa, former Tanzanian Speaker of the House, and his successful bid to become Chairman of the Commonwealth CPA.

“We are most proud and fond of the kinship that developed between Tanzania and Bermuda following that connection, a bond which carried forward through the tenure of former CPA Chairman the Hon. Samuel Sitta to Dr. Shija’s tenure as Secretary General as they all hail from Tanzania.”
