Photo Set #2 & Video: Cardboard Boat Challenge

November 20, 2015

[Updated with video] Berkeley Institute’s Team Oracle took to the top spot in yesterday’s [Nov 19] Cardboard Boat Challenge at the Bermuda National Sports Centre Aquatics Centre, beating out 23 teams from eight high schools to claim victory.

Team Oracle included Jecoa Thomas, Tyrese Cheeseman, Eduardo Viera Jr, and Camerin Pickering, marking the fastest group to complete a 50m lap of the pool in a time of 1 minute.

Teams of two to four students had two hours to build a boat, which could float two people, out of only the supplied materials, including four cardboard sheets, duct tape and a box cutter.

The Challenge, organised by the Institute of Bermuda Architects [IBA] and the Bermuda Association of Professional Engineers [BAPE], aims to encourage students to consider careers in architecture and engineering.

Aside from bragging rights for the year and other prizes, Team Oracle secured a site visit to the Team Oracle base at Dockyard. Dem Tillerz secured a site visit to a multi-story condo building under construction and Sea Venture will visit BELCO.

A “Non-Mariner’s” Prize was awarded to It’s Not for Sail of Saltus Grammar School for the team who almost made it, comprised of Dylan Somerville, Logan Krueger, Taylor Mullan and Tristan Mullan.

The event was sponsored by BELCO and BESCO.
