Smith Signs With Lewes, Scores Twice In Debut
Only hours after Lewes Football Club announced they signed Jonte Smith, the Bermudian striker made his debut for the team today [Jan 23], scoring twice in his debut.
He scored his first goal in 31st minute and his second in the 84th minute to help push Lewes to a 3-1 win over Canvey Island in the Ryman Premier League match up.
In announcing his signing earlier today, the Sussex, UK based club said, “Lewes Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of former Crawley Town and current Bermuda international striker Jonté Smith for the rest of the season.
“Smith, 21, was last season plying his trade in Scandinavia – for the Finnish first division side PS Kemi Kings where he scored 22 goals in 25 appearances and also Norwegian outfit Flekkerøy Idrettslag.
“A former Crawley Town professional, Jonté signed a two year deal back in 2012 and went on to make several appearances in the Football League for the Red Devils. After signing his contract, Smith was sent on loan to Met Police where he scored an amazing 24 goals in just 19 games at the start of the 2012/13 season.
“Smith has also spent time on loan at Havant and Waterlooville, Eastbourne Borough and Gosport Borough. Most recently the Bermudan international has been at National League North side Gloucester City.
“Jonté has represented his country at all age levels and to date has 4 senior caps – his most recent two starts being against Guatemala in June 2015 in vital 2018 World Cup qualifying fixtures.”
Commenting on the signing, Rooks gaffer Darren Freeman said: “We’re delighted to have been able to sign Jonté. He’s played League football and consistently scored goals wherever he’s been, so it’s a real coup for the club.
“With George [Landais] currently out with a knee injury we were in need of another striker, so signing Jonté comes at just the right time.
“He’s an ambitious lad and if he comes to us, scores goals, we win matches and off the back of that is able to get a move back into the pro game next season then it’ll be perfect for all parties”
