NFL Stars To Take Part In Bermuda Golf Classic

April 5, 2016

NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice will lead a group of more than 30 NFL stars heading to Bermuda next week to compete in the 2nd annual Bermuda Golf Classic at Port Royal Golf Course and the public is invited to be a part of the excitement.

The event brings together current and retired NFL athletes for a 36-hole individual stroke play NFL golf championship, followed by a team tournament in which local players can “draft” NFL players as teammates in an 18-hole “best ball” tournament.

The BTA said, “When the event tees off on April 14th the scorecards will be filled with household names from the world of professional football: Billy Joe Tolliver, a 12-year NFL veteran will be returning alongside a collection of players with impressive career resumes including NFL Hall of Famer Chris Doleman, television analyst and 11-year NFL Veteran Jay Feeley, and Ray “Sugar Bear” Hamilton, who recently retired after nine years in the league as a player and 27 years as an NFL coach.‎ Jerry Rice rounds out the headliners who will take on the challenge of Port Royal.

Tolliver, Rice, Doleman, and Feely are all scratch golfers and among the world’s top-ranked golf athletes.

“In only its second year, the Bermuda Golf Classic is quickly becoming the premier golf tournament amongst NFL Players. Since 2015, the event has successfully applied for funding as part of the BTA’s Tourism Experiences Investment process.

“Hosted and sponsored by Port Royal Golf Course, Cambridge Beaches, Bella Vista, Gosling’s and the BTA, the tournament shows off the best of the Island and attracts the attention of major players – past and present.

“The competition begins Thursday, April 14th with the first round of a 36-hole stroke play tournament. The final round is played the next day, Friday, April 15th. This individual championship tournament is followed by an 18-hole team event on Saturday, in which two NFL players are paired with two amateurs to compete together in a four man best ball format.

“In an effort to welcome these athletes to the island and give them a taste of Bermudian culture, Cambridge Beaches is hosting a barbecue party on Wednesday, April 13th, and local residents are being offered the opportunity to dance and dine with our NFL guests. Reservations are required and limited. To make reservations please call Cambridge Beaches at 234-0331.

“On Saturday, April 16th, Gosling’s and the organisers of the Bermuda Golf Classic also invite the general public to come out to the 16th Hole at Port Royal from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the “Party on 16″, where they can watch as players contend with the Par 3 signature hole, and request autographs as players exit the green. Bella Vista will be serving food, and of course Gosling’s will have plenty of rum on hand.”

“Albeit on a different playing field, we expect a fierce competition next week at the world famous Port Royal Golf Course,” said Pat Phillip-Fairn, chief product and experiences development officer at the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA].

“These athletes can play golf anywhere in the world and the fact that they’re coming here with their families for the Bermuda Golf Classic shows the undeniable strength of our golf product.

“We congratulate the event organisers who have shown year-over-year growth in the two years we have supported their golf tourism efforts.”
