Tyler Butterfield Wins Ironman 70.3 Timberman
Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield won the 2016 Ironman 70.3 Timberman triathlon in New Hampshire today [August 21], racing to victory in a time of 3:48:04.
He finished the 1.2 mile swim course in 7th position, then jumped up to 2nd after the 56-mile cycling portion, and then moved right up to first during the running segment to claim the win.
Over 2,000 athletes took part in the event, with Michi Weiss of Austria finishing 2nd in a time of 3:49:22, Chris Baird of the United States placing 3rd in a time of 3:54:06, Tim O’Donnell of the United States finishing 4th in a time of 3:56:06, and Taylor Reid of Canada rounding out the top five in a time of 3:57:38.
Butterfield — a two-time Olympian — announced last year that he would not focus on making a third Olympic bid, and instead planned to focus on long-course racing, in particular the Ironman World Championships.
His win comes a day after Flora Duffy recorded a top 10 finish in the Olympics; the two Bermudian triathletes consistently perform well on the world stage, which at one point prompted an international commentator to call Bermuda the “tiny island that produces outstanding triathletes.”
After the race, Butterfield posted on Instagram saying he was “super happy to come away with the win.”
Congrats Tyler. Fantastic accomplishment.
Congrats Tyler great job. You make us proud in this little island.
WELL DONE TY
Well done Tyler! Brilliant result!
As a country we shouldnt take credit for him or flora. They pretty much did it on their own.
