“The rescue and restoration of unique murals depicting life in Bermuda in the 1930s, the fight to control the spread of Lionfish and the donation of 300 pieces of 19th century Bermuda art were among the subjects of awards by the Bermuda National Trust last month.

The BNT said. “The Trust’s annual awards ceremony at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] saw 23 awards and certificates given to more than 70 people and organisations for their efforts to preserve and restore Bermuda’s heritage and to preserve and raise awareness of the Island’s environment. The June 22 ceremony was sponsored by Butterfield & Vallis and the awards were presented by Butterfield & Vallis owner Jim Butterfield and renowned environmentalist David Wingate.

“The St George’s Historical Society and the St George’s Foundation received the DeForest [Shorty] Trimingham Award for rescuing a series of six murals painted by renowned artist Emile Verpilleux of life in 1930s Bermuda. The murals had been displayed in the St George’s Town Hall until they were badly damaged by Hurricane Fabian in 2003.

“They then languished until the St George’s Historical Society raised funds for their restoration. They now hang in the St George’s Foundation where they are accompanied by interpretive panels describing their importance, the artist and the restoration process.

“The recipient of the top environmental award, the Patsy Phillips Bermudiana Award, was the Bermuda Lionfish Task Force represented by Kirk Kitson, for the design and implementation of the Bermuda Lionfish Control Plan.
