“Terrible, What Kind Of Person Would Do That?”

January 14, 2018

[Written by Don Burgess + Updated]

“It was horrifying.”

That was the reaction by one of the women who found a drowned pitbull tied to a concrete block yesterday off the waters at Admiralty Park.

That discovery sparked outrage across Bermuda as people expressed their disgust on social media over the “monster” who did this cruelty.

Carolina and her friend Carla had gone to Admiralty around 1.00pm on Saturday to do some paddleboarding and were there with their children.

Carolina told Bernews that Carla had spotted something brown sticking out of the water and had gone over to investigate.

She reeled back in horror after seeing it was a dog with a rope around its neck tied to a concrete block. “Just the tail was out of the water,” said Carolina.

The women quickly called 911, who in turn had the police and the animal warden show up to investigate. The two women also made an impassioned plea to the Facebook page Bermuda Pet Connection asking for assistance in cutting the pitbull loose from the rope.

Carolina said a woman and her husband showed up who freed the dog from the rope and brought it ashore.

Carolina, who has a boxer, said, “I was shaking. It was horrible. It was horrifying. It was terrible. What kind of person would do that?”

She added that hopefully someone will be able to identify who the owner of the pitbull was.

Both the SPCA and the Animal Warden were not available for comment, however a police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service is aware of disturbing images of a dog that was found dead in the waters off of Admiralty House in Pembroke. An investigation into the incident has commenced in conjunction with the relevant governmental authorities.

“Police are interested in speaking with anyone who may have any information that may assist with the investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to contact CID on 2950011.”

Update 4.23pm: The ‘Punish The Deed Not The Breed’ group also commented on this, saying, “It deeply disturbs us when we see this happen [and it's not the first time we've heard of such things] which is part of the reason why we advocate for legislation changes.

“Current dog legislation is extremely outdated and doesn’t adequately address animal abuse, we think stricter policy in regards to people who abuse animals needs to be in place.

“All of our suggested amendments got drafted and submitted to the canine committee for consideration and the current Government really needs to make it a priority to change these laws to take better care of Bermuda’s dogs. We want happy healthy dogs and owners.”

Update Jan 15, 6.47: An SPCA spokesperson said, “Following the gruesome discovery of the dog found dead in the water at Admiralty Park yesterday, the Bermuda S.P.C.A. commends the swift announcement of the investigation by the Bermuda Police Service. Anyone with information regarding this heinous act is asked to please contact CID on 295-0011.”

“The Bermuda SPCA can be a resource if someone is feeling that they can’t manage or cope with their dog, or are feeling desperate due to circumstances that may prevent them from caring for or keeping their dog. Anyone in this position is urged to call 236-7333 regarding the option to surrender the dog to the SPCA.”

  1. Spanner breath says:

If they find them I no you can’t do the same thing to them. But make an example in another way.
Hopefully the dog was microchipped that’s a start.

    • Toodle-oo says:

Oh c’mon . Doing something like that to a chipped dog is akin to leaving your driver’s license at the bank you just robbed !

      • Tweedle-dum says:

Or calling in a bomb threat and then standing outside the building you reported the bomb to be at.

  2. puzzled says:

Current dog legislation is out of date….garbage.

Someone with a finger who knows sheet.

  3. Khalid Abdul Wasi says:

Disastrous, cruel makes me want to curse, I can’t stand that type of thing, I love dogs and my favorite has always been the bull dog which includes pits Roman nose (Hinks) English and American Staffordshire terrier….it’s so sad…

  4. mixitup says:

Terrible, I’d like to see this same outrage over the mudering of Human Citizens in this country..From all in this country.

    • Time will Tell says:

      100% agreed.

    • Me says:

      Totally agree!

    • Tania Stafford says:

      You comment is fully understood.

    • Annie says:

Mixitup-I agree that there should be this same level of outrage over humans. However, this is bone-chilling. Whoever did that has to be some kind of psychopath. They could easily move on to humans. If this person did this to a vulnerable animal, they could very well move onto another vulnerable group: children. Do you want to live in a society where someone would do such a sick thing? It scares me that the monster who did this is walking around amongst us. This is some seriously scary stuff here.

      • Will says:

Chances are they are the kind of person murdering people already
The same demographic of murderers in Bermuda are the type that own and fight dogs

    • Bermudian girl says:

Animals are not as terrible as people. So when you see an animal treated this was, it is way more shameful

      • Truth says:

I agree. Animals can’t tell someone they are being targeted, animals can’t just leave to hide (they are usually tied up/crated/housed. Animals can’t call an abuse hotline… Get my point? So this outrage is warranted. Animals look to us for safety, food and water and companionship. This poor dog, pit or not, did not deserve this. There’s no excuse for this. I don’t give a rat’s arse if this person is: mentally challenged, didn’t have enough money to feed him, was scared of being turned in etc. There’s no excuse for this, there were options.

The person who did this is pure evil and I hope he has nightmares of that poor dog’s face during his last moments. Disgusting.

      • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

What a dumb comment. Pitbulls have teared people to shreds. Not as bad? Bye Felecia.

    • JCS says:

Okay, so you’re saying that if someone tied a cement block around the neck of a human, threw them overboard so that they drown, there would be no reaction? I don’t think so!

  5. Maddog says:

who preys on an animal that cannot fend for itself….REAL BRAVE of you to drown a dog….such a big man you are…I hope they find you and tie a block round your neck you ignoramus…we don’t need or want people like you walking around amongst us….and you KNOW someone knows something….if you notice a dog missing in your hood….do the right thing and report it….takes a disturbed individual to do that….you want that living next door?

  6. Izzypop says:

if you saw the pictures and were outraged flood your MP. The Premier. The dog wardens with emails
    Show your disgust.
    Laws need to be changed

  7. Helo says:

Are you kidding me…….that dog has probably never seen the inside of a vets office. So they’ll never find the owner. His neighbors, friends and family will never turn him in, and that’s very sad.

    • BOSL says:

Not true – police came to our neighborhood today – picture police showed us matches dog recently (last 6 months in the neighborhood) – guy who used to be seen walking the dog all the time hasn’t been seen recently. Police are on the case!

      • Alika says:

        This is good to know!

      • Wow says:

Sounds like they need to post his photo on Whatsapp Bermy style or Bernews as a person of interest.

  8. Bda guy says:

They should do the same thing to the person in front of everyone ehat they did to the dog

  9. Up D hill says:

They will find him , somebody saw or knows something . Find him and splash his face on every media outlet there is . What kind of person does this?

  10. Stephen Thomson says:

I will step forward as of this moment and offer a $5000.00 cash reward for information leading to the identity and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this sub human act on an innocent animal.
My name is Stephen Thomson and I am the owner of mailboxes in Hamilton.
Let’s all work together to bring this low life before the courts.
Bermuda needs to rid itself of individuals like this.

    • Truth says:

And once before the courts, HE NEEDS TO ACTUALLY BE PUNISHED! No more slaps on the wrist for animal cruelty! THIS IS NOT OK!

    • Toodle-oo says:

I’m VERY surprised that the 4-5 certain posters on here haven’t yet come on and accused you of outright racism .
They’re probably struggling with how to craft a response that will convey their covert message to make it look like certain people don’t care about ‘them’ and ’2 Bermudas’ etc .

  11. Animal Farm says:

DNA left on the block or rope may help find the a__h___

    • Just another guy says:

Water, especially salt water destroys DNA quite well.

  12. facts of the rock says:

Feed the bastard to the sharks!

  13. Inhumane. That is exactly what this is.
    Rather sad.
..must be a very angry and detached human being.
Severe consequences must be in place for such overt and callous cruelty!!

  14. Kevin says:

maybe you can elaborate on why the laws need to be changed
These dogs are known for their killer instincts …but this has nothing to do with that …the individual who committed this crime needs to be punished
simple …but oh no he will be a good young person and we shouldn’t penalize them …get a grip lets put them away for a few years and just maybe they will realize what they did was wrong.

  15. cctv says:

There is cctv right outside of Admiraly House. Hopefully, they are seen and identified.

  16. Mother Theresa says:

    Waterboard him!

  17. BullyBreed says:

Well i am also discugested also and saddened as i look at my dogs and say to myself how in the world could someone do that. I am a Bully breed owner but what amazes me is the fact that in the past in bermuda PITBULL TYPE dogs were euthanized on this island and we are talking dogs taken from people puppys and part of the family were put down because of what they are Pitbull type dog OR SO called look like and where was the public out cry silence is what we get maybe we should film a puppy being euthanized and put it on the news for everyone to see.

It’s not the dogs fault it is US!!! AND AS ALWAYS IT’S THE PITBULL that is the most abused and tortured. Hug your PIT TODAY AND SAY I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!! AND WILL PROTECT YOU.

  18. Rocky5 says:

Funny place Bermuda. More outrage expressed over the killing of dog than when a human is killed with a gun by another human….

    • Anbu says:

      Like its different anywhere else?

    • Toodle-oo says:

You and Mixitup must be good mates coming up with your dog whistle remarks .

    • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

      Only from certain people…

      • Seriously? says:

Most of the people you speak of made choices… this dog did not!

  19. TJ says:

This is absoultely disgusting, there is absolutely no reason to do such a thing like this. If the owner didn’t want to own the dog or had problems with it, they are many other options… the dog could of atleast been put down without suffering… :(

  20. Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

I didn’t hear this much outcry when a man was murdered on a field infront of children, some were his own too I believe. Some people value animals more than humans. Sickening.

    • Toodle-oo says:

      You have selective amnesia .

    • Ok says:

Gang violence is completely different. We are talking about animal cruelty here.

      • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

No it’s not. A murder is a murder and in fact murdering a human is worse. Would you care more if Lassy was murdered or your child? Actually depending on how you look you’d probably care more about the dog.

    • Concerned says:

Is their a reasoning why he was targeted? or was it a random murder. How is it sickening? an animal has no voice but a human does animals should have rights too. People who hate animals, it shows something about their character.

      • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

I don’t hate animals fool. People who hate other people because their skin is darker shows their true character! A human having a voice doesn’t stop a bullet or make them immortal.

    • Sara says:

Funny you should bring this up. I often say that if you listen to a radio show and all the things people complain about on that show, you rarely hear anyone discuss gang violence. You hear complaining about immigration, airports, the AC, etc. but for some reason people don’t bring up the most important issue facing this country. Gang violence. I find that quite interesting.

      • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

I listen to that show almost daily and you are lying.

        • Double S says:

Nope she isn’t lying. It is a daily hate fest against a certain segment. I Nothing more, nothing less.

  21. Your Ancestors Did Worse:
You are clearly mistaken. There was continuous and serious public outcry when a father was murdered in front of his bologcal children. Go into that neighbourhood… people are still upset. ..because people do not spill their emotional guts online, that does not mean that they do not care. Your comment is quite heartless, actually!!

    • aceboy says:

It is completely heartless and I have no doubt that if this person has a *pet* it is probably out back on a chain.

Dogs have more integrity than humans generally, we (humans) are lucky to have them.

      • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

As usual, you are loud, strong and wrong.

If you die at home and your corpse is there long enough your dog will eat you. What integrity?

        • aceboy says:

Just don’t ever own a dog. Do them, and humanity, a favour.

    • Your Ancestors Did Worse says:

Lies! The outrage was from the same community, my point IS a certain segment of this community did not care yet suddenly they want to fund a reward for a dogs death! They are heartless and cruel and only feel sympathy/empathy for their own…and dogs. Sickos.

      • Toodle-oo says:

You worry about what you want , they’ll worry about what they want .. ok ?
And what exactly are you doing to change the things going on that you hate anyway ?

      • nerema says:

Forget you and your stupid racist assertions about what people’s ancestors are supposed to have done. You’re an idiot.

      • Double S says:

Ahhh stereotyping and labeling a whole race as ‘sickos.’

But let me guess you’re not a racist POS right?

      • aceboy says:

The real people who don’t care and who are actually sickos are the ones who KNOW who commit the crimes, know who pulled the trigger, know who shakes down people and robs them and yet stay quiet allowing it to happen over and over again. THAT is the segment of the population who truly don’t care. I suspect you are one of them.
