Video: Adara’s Work With Newborns In Uganda

August 19, 2018

The Adara Group, established in Bermuda in 1998, has released a video on its expanding work in newborn health in Central Uganda, with the video featuring the voices of Ugandan nurses.

“For 20 years, the Adara Group have worked alongside Kiwoko Hospital, a remote hospital in Uganda where more than 10 million people live in poverty. Much of this work has focussed on establishing a best-practice neonatal intensive care unit,” explained Heidi Nakamura, Adara’s Global Health Director.

“The unit cared for more than 1,200 babies in 2017 and survival for low-birthweight babies has increased from 61%-88% since 2005.”

Late last year, Adara announced plans to share knowledge gained through this experience, by piloting a newborn programme in partnership with Nakaseke Hospital.

There, Adara is working towards the establishment of a special care unit and is providing training and guidance to staff. The unit has already cared for more than 100 babies.

Founder of the Adara Group Audette Exel recognised the role of Bermudians in supporting this work, saying, “From our earliest days, the people of Bermuda have been a huge part of our journey, and they continue to be. We could not be more grateful for their incredible ongoing support.”

The Adara Group’s mission is to bridge the world of business and the world of people in extreme poverty, and to support vulnerable communities with health, education and other essential services.
