Police Commissioner To Attend Pride Parade

June 25, 2019 | 120 Comments

“The BPS supports Bermuda’s LGBTQ community and a number of officers, including myself and other senior officers, will be attending the Parade,” Police Commissioner Stephen Corbishley said.

Commissioner Corbishley said, “Last week I sent a release to the media to announce the BPS would be involved in the LGBTQ Pride Parade on the 31st of August 2019.

“However, this was not just to say we would provide some officers to help with any route taken or traffic management. This was to say the BPS supports Bermuda’s LGBTQ community and a number of officers, including myself and other senior officers, will be attending the Parade.

“The primary function of policing is to ensure local communities are safe and free from any form of victimisation. This may be the resulting acts of criminal or anti-social behaviour but victimisation can also include marginalisation and discrimination. Reading some of the online posts circulating on social media this weekend concerns and upsets me, but sadly does not surprise either.

“The BPS will address the acidic posts by a very small few that suggest violence towards those that are LGBTQ. However, there are others that infer being LGBTQ is ‘not normal’ or something that should, and I excuse the pun, be kept in the closet, let alone have the audacity to hold a parade.

“Whilst I do respect the views of others, when expressed constructively, I fundamentally do not agree that LGBTQ communities should be subject of criticism or anything other than being seen as a normal part of our society. However sadly discrimination and stigma does exist in small pockets which if applied to others on the basis of ethnicity, gender or culture would be universally condemned.

“So why are the BPS keen to be involved in the Pride Parade? The answer for that is simple in that the BPS represent all communities in Bermuda. We are there to protect people but also we are there to build confidence and trust.

“Importantly we will be there to stand alongside our LGBTQ community to celebrate their identity, not least if it can help to change some of the minority views that being LGBTQ is both normal and an important part of the fabric that makes Bermuda a great [and safe] place to live, work and socialise.”

  1. Pure Madness!!!!! says:

What type of fullishness am I reading today.. I thought as a government official and as a person of that authority, one had to be impartial to ones beliefs. So I wonder if other bodies/groups wish to have a parade for their cause (heterosexual/racial/nationality), would it be allowed to happen and be supported by these same folks.
Lets be clear I do not have an issue whatsoever with ones sexual preferences as I have friends who prefer same sex relationships.
HOWEVER for persons to want to have a parade to show that they are proud of their sexuality, tells me that there is something seriously wrong with them. Be proud of who you are as a person and what you may have accomplished in life, who cares what others think. Why do you have to prove anything to anyone? Be who you are just as you are…..End of story!!!!

    • Mike Hind says:

May I suggest you look up what Pride is actually about?
It seems like you’re missing the point.

      • Yes says:

This is about stupidity! These gays have to push themselves onto the rest of us to appear relevant and worthy to coexist! I hope the Privy Council finds for our Government and for Jesus who both view gays as abominations and counter to the natural way of things!

        • sandgrownan says:

I’ll make a deal with you – can we remove religion?

        • Mike Hind says:

You’re right about one thing… there’s a lot of stupidity here.

Nothing you’ve said is correct or even mildly informed.
The case at the Privy Council will not go through. Why, because of exactly what you said.
“…for Jesus” (who, by the way, didn’t say a single word about gays.)
“Parliament cannot impose the religious preferences of any one group on the society as a whole through legislation of general application”.

It is illegal to refuse people equal access to rights because of your religion.

You are absolutely and 100% wrong in your position.

        • Wahoo says:

If that is the case our government itself is hypocritical…look within.

        • Come Correct says:

You know how I know you’re an idiot? The outcome of the court case is already set in stone before it even hits the privy council.

I know this, the government knows this, but the government must appeal to the fool’s who actually think something might change.

I’m going to assume that once the government loses this case…again…that you must accept it as the will of your sky pilot.

      • Disgust says:

I assume you will protest Buju Banton leading up to arrival like you idiots did for Kevin Hart when he was asked to host the Oscars.

    • sandgrownan says:

There wouldn’t need to be a parade if they had equal rights. Until you understand that, you’re just another idiot with an internet connection.

      • Bermuda says:

Wouldn’t need to anything if your obaUBP passed the law when they was Government. Spineless bunch.

Neither of your leaders supported it. Craig Cannonier current leader and past leaders Dunkley and SLEEPY Jean didn’t support it and that’s their right if they don’t approve of SSM.

        • sandgrownan says:

Don’t disagree with the comment that the OBA failed to address this – absolutely. But you do display your ignorance quite well, this isn’t a team sport, or a political view and to frame it as such demonstrates what a complete moron you are – I suspect the only thing you do well is convert oxygen into carbon dioxide.

        • no to SSM says:

LOLOLOLO so right but sandgrownan is the biggest a#$$$ on here for voting 4 them.

        • Mike Hind says:

Absolutely right. The OBA SUCKED on this, and many other issues.

However, the current administration is actively working on harming people by removing their legal access to rights for absolutely no reason.

          This isn’t a partisan thing.

Both parties are in the wrong on this.

        • Toodle-oo says:

Yes, real leaders show some backbone and make the right decision regardless of whether it will cost them votes.
Remember the passage of the Stubbs Bill in ’94 ? Support came from a number of PLP members , most who later went on to be party leaders.

          • lav says:

“Remember the passage of the Stubbs Bill in ’94 ? Support came from a number of PLP members ,”

Yes, I remember…I also remember the protests and marches by the PLP…against the LGBTQ community, and nothing has changed.
Don’t try to rewrite history to suit your racist agenda, please.

      • Jevon R says:

They have human rights already, now they special rights that elevate them above the rest of us….and they don’t even want to ensure the next generation is around…..can you and your partner procreate together? Then it’s not normal or natural

        • Mike Hind says:

That is a lie. Wanting the Government to stop trying to take away access to rights for no reason at all isn’t asking for special rights, it’s asking for what everyone else has.

The procreation argument is false and hateful and disgusting.
          You are spreading lies.

    • Reality Cheque says:

So, hypothetically of course (wink, wink), if Bermuda were to have a parade on Bermuda Day celebrating how proud we are of our heritage and Bermudian-ness, you think that is wrong?

How about a Labour Day parade celebrating labour unions, wrong also? And let’s talk about Black History month – better not be any parades, am I right?

You have the right not to attend a parade you know. You have a choice. Make yours and shut up.

    • question says:

“for persons to want to have a parade to show that they are proud of their sexuality, tells me that there is something seriously wrong with them”

So you would have been against the Carnival last week then? And you would have been against the Police using its resources to ensure Carnival-goes were safe. Right?

      No, I didn’t think so.

    • Not to be Rude says:

Look up Stonewall Riot to understand the meaning of Pride and your ignorance is showing.

Also they did have a hetro pride just last week called Carnival.

      • Waste says:

BS! Carnival was and excuse for people who otherwise stay home eating sugar to shake their tail feathers in public! Another disgusting display like what the gays will do!

    • Be Realistic says:

      And herein lies the issue:

“Lets be clear I do not have an issue whatsoever with ones sexual preferences as I have friends who prefer same sex relationships” – Prefer as is I prefer chicken soup to Red Bean? Not quite as simplistic as that is it….

    • berlinda says:

Yes sweetie….remember your gombey parade you had last week?
      It was also policed.
See, you too can have a disgusting parade of flesh, and be protected by the police.

    • So does this mean he will be participating in Labour and Government disputes/ marches too, if so we wont have to worry about getting sprayed by teargas.
      LMFAO

      • Toodle-oo says:

You don’t have to worry about pepper spray if you’re not breaking the law. LMAO

      • Mike Hind says:

Many people that support Pride have spoken out against the use of teargas.
Stop trying to paint the two as mutually exclusive. It’s dishonest.

      • Wahoo says:

If you laughed your a$$ off there wouldn’t be anything left.

      • Real Deal says:

nope.. the governor is in charge of police not government that is why you will see stuff like pepper spaying old people and stuff like this.

        • berlinda says:

Old people who get pepper sprayed are criminals….that’s why they get sprayed…get it?

      • Mark says:

Aren’t you glad you were to lazy to pull up the tape from the May 24th parade.

      • Todd says:

        That’s all you got

I’m going not because I give a rats about gay rights, I wish them the best and a happy life, but what I really want is all these BIGOTS to pipe down. Too many small minded people here on race and status and this and that.

        Time to change Bermuda.

      • sandgrownan says:

        It was pepper spray.

      • Come Correct says:

Tear gas and pepper spray are two totally different things. You wouldn’t know because you would use the elderly as a human shield, coward.

    • Real Deal says:

brits are pushing the agenda he is brit.

I want a female officer to pat me down if i have to be pat down in the future some how. – hint hint wait too you see whats next on the agenda if you have not seen it on brit news programs already.

      • Mike Hind says:

        This is gibberish…

      • Come Correct says:

“I want a female officer to pat me down if i have to be pat down in the future some how.”

Literally can not be done but very telling of what you think of females.

    • Rhonnda Oliver says:

” I thought as a government official and as a person of that authority, one had to be impartial to ones beliefs.”

Have you noticed that the Government is spending a lot of money on trying to stop these same people from having the same rights as everyone else, solely based on religious beliefs?

    • Cara says:

Pride isn’t just about celebration of their sexuality, it’s about being proud of surviving in a society that has long said they are not equal because of their sexuality and calling attention to the ways in which the LGBTQ+ community is still marginalized. There are countless parades that celebrate race and nationality though white heterosexuals don’t need one because traditionally society has celebrated and accepted them without question.

  2. Joe Bloggs says:

I like the Commissioner’s inclusive philosophy. I hope he is around for a while to spread his ideals.

    • Jay Bee says:

Where was the commissioner during Juivert??? Inclusive my ass!

    • James says:

At the rate Bermudians are paying this jokers salary and housing every month he should be at all parades.

  3. Bill says:

Whatever and later all the officers will be submitting for overtime at the end of the month.

  4. Lies says:

“However sadly discrimination and stigma does exist in small pockets”

Look mate you just arrived here so it’s always fun to listen to someone lie when you already know the truth. Stop stating information that is incorrect.

Doesn’t look like a small pocket unless you’re talking about the small pride group that showed up.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWfWk73aR88

I honestly the people don’t care anymore if just stop fronting this stuff in front of the children. 2 men slapping tongue on each other in public, keep that behavior in the house.

    • Mike Hind says:

Why? Why should they have to keep their relationship private?

      • puzzled says:

        Your comment makes no sense.

        Different between public and private.

Would you fondle your wifes parts on Front Street?
        Idiot.

        • Mike Hind says:

Who is calling to fondle anyone on Front Street?

What on earth are you talking about?

Is that what you think gay is? Fondling each other in public?

      • Crazy says:

2 men slapping tongue on each other in public is just robbing the dirt in peoples face.

      • Yoooooo says:

Because no one wants to see two guys make out thats fn nasty!

        • sandgrownan says:

TBH, I don’t want to see a hetero couple make out in public either. That’s really not appropriate.

        • Mike Hind says:

Well done, exposing your ridiculous, childish, bigoted point of view.

We can now ignore your input…

      • Jevon R says:

Because it promotes the elimination of life….what are you guys celebrating, ensuring you do your part by confusing the next generation…only opp sex relationships ensure the human race will be around for the next century…that’s normal and natural

        • Jevon R says:

But you can do what you want just like everyone else, just in the privacy of your own home

        • sandgrownan says:

And there it is, the stupidiest f*ckign thing I’m going to read all day.

Do you have any skin on your knuckles?

        • chris says:

Gay people can have children. Please explain why they cannot? …. so no difference between straight people and gays… we are all HUMAN.

          • Jevon R says:

When have you seen/heard of a same sex couple making a baby together….explain that to me….two men together or two women together can never ensure the next generation will be around because it’s not biologically possible….semen meets egg to make a baby….what more info than that do you need to no it’s not normal or natural….you guys need to wake up

            • Mike Hind says:

When has the ability to procreate even mattered in legal matters?

It’s not a stipulation for marriage, it’s not a requirement for citizenship, so this entire argument is irrelevant and hateful.

            • Come Correct says:

“what more info than that do you need to NO it’s not normal or natural”

You don’t even KNOW the native language you were born and taught to speak. Please don’t reproduce.

        • Mike Hind says:

You’ve posted nonsense like this before and had it shown to be completely incorrect.

Why do you keep posting lies?
If your position is so strong, why do you have to lie to support it?

Your premise is that Pride is about turning everyone gay. That is false.
Your premise is that gay people can’t have kids. That is false.

Nothing you are saying is true. It’s just justification for hate.

          Shame on you.

        • Cara says:

considering straight people aren’t going to stop having sex, I don’t think homosexuality promotes the elimination of life. Though I would argue, some of you who partake in sexual activity that is heterosexual and have babies, really shouldn’t be having them. And no, loving people as they are with their innate sexuality is not confusing anyone. While we all have a journey of self-discovery to go through in discovering our likes and dislikes sexually speaking, the truly confusing thing is someone trying to deny their sexual orientation because of people like you who hold the views you do. Homosexuality exits in nature, it’s existed since the beginning of time and it’s as normal and natural as heterosexuality. As far as your comment below, no one owes you anything and they can do whatever they want in public. If you’re so offended it says to me that you have something to feel insecure about. Otherwise you probably wouldn’t give a second thought to what other people are doing and where they are doing it.

    • berlinda says:

“keep that behavior in the house.”

      You talking about carnival?

    • Its a European thing, you would’nt understand.

    • Real Deal says:

“stop fronting this stuff in front of the children” lol wait until you see whats next on the agenda. the children are being primed. not many people can see the chess that is being played

      • Mike Hind says:

What does this mean? It seems to be a thinly veiled premonition of “something worse”, like paedophilia… but, of course, without the courage of actually saying it.

Here’s the thing you lot always conveniently ignore:

        Consent.

        Children cannot offer consent.

And, in case you didn’t know it, it was supporters of the Stubbs’ Bill that lobbied government to RAISE the age of consent, back in the day.

So, your thinly veiled “Wait and see” threat is not only false, it’s completely ignorant.

      • PBanks says:

Can you expound on this? What’s the next step of this agenda?

    • Cara says:

I assume from your comments you identify as heterosexual. If no one asks you to keep your behavior and tongue slapping, as you so eloquently put it, to yourself in your house, than you shouldn’t be asking two men or two women to either. LGBTQ+ people have just as much of a right to love and express their love as you do yours. Please stop with the tired excuse of needing to protect the children. Children are pretty smart and naturally accepting and inclusive. The attitude you are displaying is why that changes as they mature. I would prefer you keep your homophobia in your own house and keep it from being in front of the children.

      • Mike Hind says:

At least “EW! It’s yucky!” isn’t a religious reason to oppose! That’s kind of refreshing!
I mean, it’s childish and invalid, of course, but it’s nice to see someone NOT using their religion as an excuse to hate people!

      • PBanks says:

Children indeed are smart. The only thing that can be taught in these cases is acceptance or hate.

  5. Cow Polly says:

Premier Burt and Minister Caines, please take note of Commissioner Corbishley’s actions. This is what true leadership looks like.

Trust we’ll see you at Victoria Park on August 31st.

    • Portia says:

No, this what trying to score political points looks like.

And there is absolutely NO ONE in Bermuda who HAS to attend this parade. Trying to push an agenda on other people, or pressure them to participate in these event is just tasteless and wrong and will be met with resistance.

      • sandgrownan says:

oooh, you sound like an internet toughguy…issuing threats from behind your keyboard.

        • Waste says:

Why don’t you give your real name so we can see how tough you are? Troll!

          • Mike Hind says:

This… from someone hiding behind a fake name, too!

            That’s ridiculous!

        • Swing vote no more says:

STFU you obaUBP troll! My people will not vote for you anymore.

      • Mike Hind says:

You’ve posted stuff like this before, and every time you’ve been wrong and every time you’ve been exposed.

Yet you continue to do it.

Why do you need to hate these people this much? What is it about them that makes you have to lie and threaten and twist the truth every single time you post on the subject?

Surely you have better things to do with your life…

      • Come Correct says:

Just took a screenshot of this. Can’t wait to use it.

    • no to SSM says:

True leadership comes from him supporting 2 men in bed LOLOLOLOL. You lost ya foxes tail mind. LMAO

  6. Kevin says:

May we all show up and show support for the simple things in life
    Equality and Respect
    I’ll be there

    • Waste says:

Total waste of time! Bunch of gays throwing their bodies and kisses around! What a circus

      • Mike Hind says:

Seriously? This is what you think being gay is?

        Are you seven?

        • Waste says:

Try SEVENTY you young upstart! Leave my community as it is and stop pushing these people on us!

          • Mike Hind says:

They’re already here. They’re your neighbors, they’re your kids.

No one is forcing anything on anyone. They’re just trying to stop folks from hurting them.

  7. Me says:

    Love wins every time

  8. Jay Bee says:

Clearly you wouldn’t know leadership if it fell out of the sky and landed on your face ! What exactly in this article shows any hint or leadership? The fact that this selected placeholder occupies a position that could have been filled by a qualified Bermudian should trouble you. Why doesn’t it ? Do tell, how a leader chooses one parade over another and is still seen to be an effective leader ?

  9. Yaweh says:

Burt, will you do the right thing and attend?

    • Rog says:

That’s not “the right thing”…. Bermuda has far to many instances of politicians shallowly attending things… what purpose would it serve?

And before people scream out that I’m one of the haters, get your facts straight.. I simply hate to see the constant call for politicians to support or attend things, condemn things, resign over things simply for the sake of it… if it’s part of their politics, then fine…otherwise why bother?

It’s just a case of “I’ll tell you to do something, and if you don’t a I’ll shred you online”…

    • Portia says:

Why should he have to? Why should anyone be pressured to attend? Stop forcing your agenda on others, it is tasteless and wrong.

      • sandgrownan says:

No one is being pressured to do anything. No one is being asked to do anything.

      • berlinda says:

        “it is tasteless and wrong.”

        Carnival again?

You all hypocrites need to get your s&!t together, you all look so stupid it’s hilarious.

      • Mike Hind says:

Another bit of misinformation from you.
Every time. Don’t you get tired of being wrong?

The only ones forcing an agenda are the Government and those supporting taking the case to the Privy Council.

Your position has been shown to be wrong, unconstitutional and illegal three times now and will be shown again if it goes to Privy Council.

You are wrong. Period. There is no argument (Not that any of you anti-equality folks ever present and defend an argument). You are wrong.

        • Jevon R says:

You mean Mr Pettingail lied about what his agenda was, said his proposal wouldn’t bring about ssm and turned around and did just that…the country does not want it and the new government of the day tried to give you the DPA to meet both entities wants and needs….so Mr Pettingail did not tell the truth from the start and that’s why we are in this mess

          • Mike Hind says:

            More lies.

Why do you have to resort to lies to support your position, if it’s so strong?

  10. me says:

you are in power now ,yes time to unify all our people EVERY ONE

  11. Jevon R says:

But you can do what you want just like everyone else, just in the privacy of your own home

    • sandgrownan says:

How about the religious do that? How about they just STFU about their imaginary friend in the sky. How about they keep it to themselves.

    • Mike Hind says:

Nope. They can do it in public, too… just like everyone else.

You don’t get to tell people what to do.

      Get over it.

    • berlinda says:

I wish you would stay the f home and shut the f up, jevon, girlfriend :)

    • conscious observer says:

      your another idiot

      • berlinda says:

        you’re

        sweetie,

        You are a moron.
Stop forcing it on us, we all feel sorry for you.

        • Mike Hind says:

No one is forcing anything on you. Your life won’t be affected in any way.

  12. conscious observer says:

that was for Jevon the closet is calling him obviously

    • Jevon R says:

Thanks, but knowledge brings about wisdom, and name calling just shows your ignorance…..step ya game up and stop taking things personally….

      • Mike Hind says:

And you have shown, repeatedly, that you have neither knowledge nor wisdom.
Every post here shows your ignorance.

  13. Jevon says:

Sounds like we all need to meet up and have an open discussion
