Driver Arrested Following Paget Two Car Collision

[Updated] A man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving early this morning [July 14] following a two car collision on South Road in Paget which resulted in another man being injured and transported to King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Police spokesperson Robin Simmons said, “Around 2:40am Sunday, July 14th a two car collision occurred on South Road in Paget, between the Botanical Gardens and Tee Street.

“Early information suggests that the two cars involved were being driven in opposite directions along South Road near the junction with Happy Talk Lane at the time.

“One of the drivers, said to be a 58 year old man, sustained leg and chest injuries while the other driver, said to be a 32 year old man, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

“A medical update is anticipated in due course.

“Both vehicles were damaged and traffic diversions are in effect while the scene is being processed.

“Inquiries continue and any witnesses are asked to call the main police telephone number 295-0011.”

Update 11.30am: BFRS Staff Officer Sergeant Allan Wilkinson said, “At approximately 2:38am on July 14th, 2019 the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service responded to a two car road traffic collision near the junction of Tee Street and South Road, Paget.

“On our arrival the officer in charge Sergeant David Malpas stated that their was one male trapped, firefighters used the “jaws of life” to open the doors and extricate the trapped man from the vehicle. Both drivers of the vehicles were then transported by ambulance to KEMH.”

Update 6.50pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 2:40am Sunday, July 14th police, Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service and ambulance personnel responded to a two car collision on South Road in Paget, between the Botanical Gardens and Tee Street.

“It appears that the two cars involved were being driven in opposite directions along South Road near the junction with Happy Talk Lane when they collided.

“One of the drivers, said to be a 58-year-old Pembroke man, sustained leg and chest injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle he was in by the attending firefighters while the other driver, said to be a 32-year-old Devonshire man, was also injured and later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

“A medical update on both men is anticipated in due course.

“However, at this time it is understood that the 32-year-old man’s injuries are less serious than the 58-year-old man’s injuries.

“Both vehicles were damaged and traffic diversions were in effect while the scene was processed.

“Inquiries continue and any witnesses are still asked to call the main police telephone number 295-0011 as soon as possible.”
