BA: Flights Cancelled Tomorrow for 3rd Day

April 16, 2010

For the third day in a row, British Airways has cancelled flights tomorrow [Apr 17], including the Bermuda inbound and outbound flights due safety concerns over ash clouds from the volcanic eruption.

Passengers on cancelled flights can call 1-800-AIRWAYS, use their website BA.com and the local airport ticket office will open again on Saturday, April 17 from 1 pm -6pm.

British Airways states they “sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused by this unprecedented crisis which is causing severe disruption to passengers and airlines all around the world.”

Bermuda’s mail delivery has also seen interruptions, with mail detained in Toronto, Canada.

It appears the travel plans of the 20 strong tourism delegation [which includes Premier Dr Ewart Brown] who are presently in London have also been affected.

The International Air Transport Association estimated today [Apr 16] that airlines will lose approximately $200 million a day due to the closure of airports all over northern Europe. The cancellations were reflected in stock markets, where the prices of airlines for three most affected countries fell. British Airways shares fell 1.1%, Germany’s Lufthansa fell 2.1%, and Air France-KLM dropped 1.7%.

The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull is 1,666 metres [or 5,466 ft in height] and erupted twice in 2010, on 20 March and 15 April. It is pictured below in March 2010:

The eruption is thought to have begun on 20 March 2010, about 5 miles east of the top crater of the volcano in Fimmvörðuháls. On Wed April 14 Eyjafjallajökull resumed erupting after a brief pause, this time from the top crater in the centre of the glacier, causing meltwater floods to rush down the nearby rivers, and requiring 800 people to be evacuated. Below is a raw video showing the volcano as it continues to spew ash and debris:
