Video & Photos: Firefighters Extinguish House Fire

July 27, 2010

At approximately 9:30 this morning [July 27], firefighters put out a blaze that ripped through a two story home in the Knapton Hill, Smith’s area. All the residents [plus their dog] rushed from the home and all are fine, and fortunately there were no injuries.

One resident told us he was in the shower, came out and the room was filled with smoke, so he and the others quickly ran from the home with literally only the clothes on their back. Although they are elated to have escaped harm, they have lost substantial amounts of their possessions

This is particularly disheartening to one resident who works a computer based business, and has effectively lost months of work, as it is assumed her computer is burnt beyond repair. As she wryly said, “I was careful to back up my work …but the disc is in the house”.

Her husband, an avid cyclist, has likely lost his cycles, including one he had custom designed specifically for him. The couple, guest workers who are due to leave the island later this year, said they won’t be expending great efforts on replacing household items, beyond necessities, due to that fact. The couple has the support of friends, whom they will be staying with tonight and as needed, as clearly the house is not in a livable state presently.

The cause of the fire is not yet determined, however one resident told us that he saw flames coming out of the hot water heater. At least five Fire Service vehicles, and in excess of a dozen personnel attended the scene. We will update with official information from the Fire Service when available.
