Swan: Police Handle Threats, No Politics Needed
Leader of the Opposition Kim.Swan has spoken up in reference to the statement released by the Premier’s press secretary stating they have asked the Police to investigate an alleged threat made against the Premier on a local message board. Calling the post “irresponsible”, Mr Swan said it “correctly needed to be referred to the Police”, but that “it should not be immediately politicized in the way the Premier’s Press Officer has done.”
Mr Swan’s full statement follows below:
The matter of an irresponsible forum post directed at outgoing Premier Brown, correctly needed to be referred to the Police. And then the Police should investigate and decide whether it represents a real threat or not, and if so take appropriate action. It should not be immediately politicized in the way the Premier’s Press Officer has done. Unless his job description has changed, he is not professionally qualified to make an accurate security assessment.
Many of us still remember the bullet that was allegedly sent to the Premier in the mail during the last few weeks of the 2007 General Election. Nothing more has been said about that incident, despite many follow-up questions.
In the meantime, we take this opportunity to encourage all Bermuda’s people to engage in responsible dialogue on our blogs, talk shows and letters to the editor.
There is no room for hate dialogue and/or threatening language, either written or spoken. Our community needs reconciliation and healing, not further division and polarization as we have experienced in the last few years.
