World Champs: Nelson Adds Another Medal

colleen nelsonTwo days after winning a gold medal in the World Masters Championships, Colleen Nelson has added a bronze medal to the tally. The 61-year-old swimmer picked up the bronze in the Women’s 60 – 64 age group 50 metre breaststroke, clocking a time of 43.66 yesterday [Aug 3].

Two swimmers from Germany, Brigitte Kuehl and Annerose Trobisch took first and second, and Ms Nelson but managed to beat over 30 swimmers to take the bronze. Her first medal in these championships, a gold, came in the Women’s 60-64 Age Group 100m Breaststroke.

She, along with other members of the Bermuda Masters Swimming Team, is competing at the XIII FINA World Masters Championships in Sweden. The event features age categories, with most senior category being “Over 95″, in which 86-year-old Japanese swimmer Mieko Nagaoka set a new world age-group record in the women’s 50 metre breaststroke of 2:50.35 yesterday.
