BELCO: 2,800 Without Power This Morning

September 22, 2010

1167050_light_bulb[Updated] BELCO reports that as of 6:30am, there are 2,800 customers left without power, down from a high of approximately 28,700 around 48 hours ago, after Igor’s passing. 1,100 of those out are in the central areas, 1,000 in the east, and 700 in the western parishes.

BELCO previously explained they got the main lines, which impact a large amount of customers, on first. This morning spokeswoman says Susan McGrath-Smith said “Work will continue to be slow and difficult. The jobs are numerous and most require a lot of work. What’s more, each job is only restoring power to a small number of customers with the maximum we expect to see restored with any one job being about 40 customers. That said, two crews are also tackling the easiest jobs across the Island to get those customers restored.|

Ms. McGrath-Smith went on to say that BELCO expects the majority – but not all – of the remaining customers will have power. She said “Some customers could be off through the weekend. We are focused on completing restoration work as quickly as possible, but must emphasize that there is still a lot of work to be done. Customers who have been without power longest are being given priority, however, we caution that some of these may be difficult jobs.”

Work areas for start of today include (note, these are areas that went out early on Sat., Sept. 19) They are Hinson Hall, South Road in Tuckers Town, Sears Hill/St Marks, Tatem Hill, Seamont, Fruitland Lane, Whitney Avenue, and the Sayle Rd/Verdmont area

BELCO’s other proposed work areas today in include North Shore Pembroke, St Georges, and Pearmans Hill.

Update 11:45am: As of 11:00 am, approximately 2,400 customers remain without power, down from 2,800 earlier this morning.

BELCO says “As work continues, we wish to advise customers that they may see advance work crews coming through to do preparation work, like digging holes for new utility poles. They will be followed later by crews to put up the new poles and connect the lines. We must caution that jobs involving pole replacement do require a lot of work, so these restorations will take time.

We also wish to advise customers who have partial current that in order to safeguard appliances, they should either unplug them or turn off power completely. And, we want to emphasize safety: Downed lines should be considered live – piles of debris may conceal downed lines. Please use generators safely, because if inappropriately operated, they can pose hazards to our crews working on the lines.”

In addition to areas mentioned earlier, crews will be working in the following locations, giving priority to customers who have been without power since Saturday:
