Hurricane Julia Forms Behind Hurricane Igor

Yet another hurricane has formed behind the massive Hurricane Igor, with Tropical Storm Julia being upgraded to a hurricane earlier today [Sept 14].

Hurricane Julia, the fifth hurricane of the season, has maximum sustained winds near 75 mph [120 kph] with some additional strengthening forecast during the next day or so. The hurricane is moving west-northwest near 12 mph [19 kph]. The Bermuda Weather Service says that Julia is not a threat to Bermuda at this time, and is currectly 2170 nautical miles away from the island.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Igor remains a powerful Category 4 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 135mph.

    Just wondering…Why is it that the US weather reports, our own ZBM acquired ACCU weather forecasts along with the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) advisories have been commenting on the ‘potential’ threat of Hurricane IGOR to Bermuda for the past 48 hours and our own weather.bm still glibly reports Igor is ‘not a threat.’ I realise it also says ‘at this time’ but surely the risk should be elevated to a ‘potential’ threat given the NHC and ACCU weather advisories. Curious!
