Recently appointed Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith has been vocal in encouraging private sector organisations to play an active role in supporting and assisting students in Bermuda’s public education system.

One such organisation has demonstrated that good will, and yesterday Minister Smith was delighted to join with the members of the Village Pride Community Center (VPCC) to launch a special afterschool programme aimed at mentoring and assisting students of the Heron Bay Primary School.

Pictured below are Dame Jennifer Smith, Minister Zane DeSilva (Constituency representative) and members of the Vernon Temple AME Church’s Village Pride Community Centre in support of their student after school programme.

Chairman of the VPCC, Vernon Temple AME Church Pastor Pedro A. Castro, Jr. said math and literacy tutoring will be the main focus, as well as homework assistance.

Additionally Pastor Castro said the organisation has partnered with the Eliza Doolittle Foundation, who will provide healthy snacks and dinner for all student participants and volunteers.

The programme, which takes effect on November 15, is part of an outreach initiative for Vernon Temple. The VPCC has a Board of Directors and in addition to Pastor Castro serving as Chairman, other members include Rev. Georgette Prime-Godwin as the Executive Director as well as 30 volunteers.
