Women’s A League, Swallows A vs Wildcats A, Final score: 1-1

Wildcats’ Susanna Almeida gave her team the lead in the 26th minute scoring for a penalty corner, but two minutes later Swallows’ Hannah Ellison evened the score from a field goal. Both teams fought very hard for a victory but were unlucky not to find the back of the goal. Swallows’ Elizabeth Stewart, Hannah Ellison and Gemma Rowe played excellent in mid field and Kelli Nusum and Heather Sinclair in defense.

Budgies A vs Ravens A, Final score: 0-0

Budgies knew they had to come out and play aggressively against the high standard of the Raven’s team. In the first few minutes of the game, Budgies were awarded a penalty corner, but the shot from Budgies’ Keishae Robinson went wide. For much of the first half, the ball was in the Budgies’ possession and they pushed up the field looking for a goal but to no avail.

The second half was much like the first with most of the game being played in mid-field. Budgies moved the ball well across the field which has been lacking in some of their previous games. A last minute run up the field by Budgies’ Lakae Dill saw a last attempt to score but her pass could not find Jaselle Smith on the left corner post. The match was very tight with both teams creating many chances, but neither could find the net and the game ended 0-0.

Women’s B League , Bluebirds B vs Canaries B, Final score: 2-0

Bluebirds applied pressure from the start of this game with attacks mounted from both wings as well as from a strong midfield comprising of Kris Soares, Fiona Hughes, Debbie Sagurs and Liz Twite, however, Canaries’ defense stood firm and the first half ended in a scoreless draw. Bluebirds’ Laura Bardgett finally found the back of the net from a well executed penalty corner in the 40th minute of the second half. An infraction on the goal line prevented a goal being scored by left wing, Denise O’Donoghue and Bluebirds were rewarded with a penalty stroke. Bluebirds’ Captain Kris Soares made no mistake in its conversion placing the ball in the far right corner of the goal to advance the score 2-0. Canaries were later awarded a penalty stroke for a similar infraction, but Bluebirds’ ‘keeper’ Carla Pedro denied Canaries a chance to get on the score sheet through an excellent save. This game was hard fought right until the end with Bluebirds finishing up as the well deserved victors.

Men’s League, Panthers vs Polecats, Final score: 5-2

Panthers’ Phil Philpott gave them the lead seconds into the game due to a sleepy Polecats defense from a field goal, but it would be Polecats’ Donnie Simmons who would level the score of 1-1 in the 19th minute and the first half ended in a tie.

Panthers’ Tony Ward took the lead again in the 40th minute of the second half from a field goal. As a result of a foul in the circle by Polecats, Panthers were rewarded a penalty stroke and Jack Finlay scored in the 52nd minute to take the score 3-1. David Horan scored a penalty corner in the 59th minute and Justin Barritt a field goal in the 65th minute to make it 5-1 for Panthers. Polecats’ Andrew Brouwer scored from a penalty corner in the 66th minute but Panthers were the winners of 5-2.

Despite torrential rain and wind on Friday night, both Panthers and Polecats played a competitive and well fought game with both creating many chances to score goals.

Chameleons vs Rebels, Final score: 1-2

Chameleons started very ragged with a 10 men team which the Rebels took scant advantage of by David Gutteridge converting a short corner in the 17th minute to go one up by the end of the first half.

Rebels lost their shape and drive in the second half and paid for it, letting the Chameleons put pressure on their defense. A hard pass towards the Rebels ‘D’ deflected up, scattering the defense, before being picked clean out of the air in the 50th minute by Chameleons’ Robin ‘secret weapon’ Smallman for the equalizer. Rebels shrugged that off gaining more short corners, one of which was received by Bert Rodney who evaded the outrushing defenders and crushing a shot at goal; the ball smashed off the Chameleons’ ‘keeper’s’ pads, rocketing up into the inner goal upright to score in the 63rd minute. This goal proved to be the winner for Rebels as the Chameleons couldn’t recover despite many shots from penalty corners. Chris Venter, Rebels’ ‘keeper’ having a fine game, saving many shots heading towards both corners of the Rebels goal.
