May: Foster Care Month in Bermuda

May 11, 2011

Minister of Youth, Families, Sports, and Community Development Glenn Blakeney today announced that May is Foster Care Month in Bermuda with the aim of raising public awareness on the topic of foster care and foster parenting.

“All children deserve a safe and happy life and foster parenting is a significant and rewarding opportunity that helps shape brighter futures,” Minister Blakeney said. “Young people in foster care especially, need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are significantly challenged.”

The Minister said he saluted and honoured foster parents, relative caregivers, mentors, social workers and advocates for their compassion and for making a positive difference in the lives of children in foster care. “Thanks to these unsung heroes, many formerly abused or neglected youth will either safely reunite with their parents, be cared for by relatives, or be adopted by loving families,” he said.

Minister Blakeney said there are currently more than 100 children in foster care and with guidance and support from caring adults, children in foster care are capable of realizing their fullest potential.

Foster Care Month will showcase a variety of meaningful ways for the public to get involved and make a difference in the lives of children in foster care. The Department of Child and Family Services needs more members of the community to help children in our foster care system to reach their fullest potential and Minister Blakeney takes this opportunity to encourage potential foster parent candidates to assist in making such a noble and worthy commitment.

“Every young person in foster care benefits from a meaningful connection to a caring adult who becomes a supportive and lasting presence in his or her life. Now is the time to get involved. No matter how much time you have to give, you have the power to do something that will change a life for a young person in foster care,” Minister Blakeney added
