PLP To Hold “Election Action Days”

May 26, 2011

vote voting dec 20120The PLP will be hosting ‘Election Action Days’ on May 28 and June 4.

An email was sent out to members saying: “We all know that this next election is very important,” and asking them to join them and “go door to door to educate and register thousands of new voters throughout the island.”

Premier Paula Cox said: “I’m looking forward to the events. I’ve always enjoyed the door to door canvassing even in my early years in politics when out canvassing with Dame Lois, Mr. Burrows, Mr.Simmons and my father.”

“I love the face to face contact with the voting public. I have seen imminent mothers-to-be and have recruited Party workers, and it’s always good to hear live and direct feedback. It helps keep the Party connected. Canvassing and direct contact with voters helps keep one grounded and it certainly is a great way of ensuring you keep the people’s needs top of mind,” concluded the Premier.

When asked if the ‘Election Action Days’ indicated that an election may is on the horizon, a PLP spokesperson did not confirm or deny, saying: “This exercise is an annual exercise to meet our voters, our constituents, and our people, where they are – in their communities,in their neighborhoods, and on their doorsteps.”

“It gives us direct contact and communication with the voters – unfiltered and without translation. It allows the voter first hand contact with their representatives. The Progressive Labour Party deems this exercise invaluable. This year it is being spread over two weekends, May 28 and June 4, to give all branches an opportunity to participate. Our MPs and members are eagerly looking forward to this exercise.”

The full ‘Action Day’ statement follows below:

Election Action Day – 28 May and 4th June 2011

Are you ready to get involved? We all know that this next election is very important and we, the Progressive Labour Party are committed to resetting the dial for our country.

In order to effect that change, we need to move into action!

Please join the PLP family Saturday, 28 May and 4 June from 10 AM – 4PM, as we team up as a PLP family, and go door to door to educate and register thousands of new voters throughout the island.

  • What: Constituency neighbourhoods door-knock
  • When: 28 May and 4 June 10 AM – 4 PM
  • Where: Island-wide blitz
  • Why: Educate, re-register prior voters and register hundreds of new voters

Door knocking might sound intimidating, but it’s actually a lot of fun! It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and talk with them about issues that affect all of us.

It’s a wonderful way to meet other PLP volunteers, and it’s the best way I know to persuade someone to vote.

Registering voters and canvassing face to face is the most effective way to bring new people into the political process. Let’s register and canvass for record numbers of PLP voters.

Please R.S.V.P by sending an email to our Executive Officer, Ms. Dawn Simmons at dsimmons@plp.bm if you can make it. We need to have a count of team numbers so we know how many registration packets to have available. Let us know you’re coming. Thanks so much and we’ll see you on 28 May and 5 June.

Let’s Make it Happen!

Paula A. Cox

I believe we do need to “reset” the dial and make big changes. I just don’t believe they’ve got my back, or that they will make the changes necessary to get us back on track. :-(

    • Vote OBA says:

What Changes do you think are needed?

      • Want Change says:

Here are the changes I want to see:

        1. Ban ministerial cars. They are symbols of shame. A legacy of the UBP which the PLP have embraced and expanded like never before. All this while Bermudians are working 2, 3 jobs to make ends meet.
        2. Lead by example. I want to see MP’s doing more with less. Take a pay cut, and cutback all the senseless travel and other royal perks which cost millions.
        3. All MP’s and Senators take a drug test annually. I don’t want legislators who are drug addicts.
        4. I want to see a govt plan detail how a third and forth pillar can be added to the economy.
        5. What is happening with all these hotels and guest houses which have been demolished & abondoned? I want to see a plan to bring back tourism.
        6. I want to see gangstaa’s eraticated. Police admit they know their first name, second name and nick name. Do something about this!!
        7. I want to see the govt taking education seriously, and not managing govt schools like they are all daycare centers. I want to see an end to govt ministers making excuses for bad behaviour, and at the same time not giving teachers and headmasters the support they need.
        8. I want to see the Minister of Tourism radically changed. It is a yesterday organization that does not enhance Bermuda tourism anymore. It should be merged with Min of Finance.

If the PLP come to my door, I will hand them this wish list to take back to their caucus.

  2. sandgrownan says:

    Educate…voters?

Brainwash with boogeyman stories and lies, as has been their MO in the past.

  3. I do not wish to be educate about more hog wash. As a voter I have had enough lies and lack of understanding. Where is the leadership in this country. PLP has lost their way and become a party to take their voters for granted.

Why wait until close to an election? The MPs with their large salaries should be visiting homes on a regular basis not when an election is on the way! Trust me I will not be voting PLP in the next election.

The people of Bermuda need to stand together and make a change to teach PLP to not take us for granted.

    Vote for change!!!

  4. Bible Scholar says:

They are right about one thing. Talking with people face to face is the best way to know their needs. Will it make a difference to PLP policy? That is another question altogether! I have walked Bermuda’s hills and back roads myself, canvassing for a PLP that doesn’t exist anymore. These guys are imposters. In any case, two days for canvassing is ludicrous, a drop in the bucket. They will need WEEKS to canvass the whole island and that’s only to knock, say hello and leave some propaganda!
I take it as an insult that we are only worth visiting once (to my knowledge) since the last election

  5. Anyone says:

As a victim of PLP’s lack of response to numerous meetings requested for their help in a serious business situation, tehy will NOT have my support in the next general election. I too, thought they had our back’s,,,the PEOPLES PARTY huh?,,,LIAR’S.

  6. Truth is killin' me... says:

Playing the race card/Ewart Brown style won’t work in this election. Too many people hurting out there and the Fat Cats aren’t feeling a thing. The people are disillusioned and there are too many liars in Government/ALL PARTIES!!!

    • Nothing Will Change says:

They will play the race card, and it will win them the next Election. Proof is that the PLP will not debate the issues. They will just tell their flock to keep quiet and remind their followers that the OBA just want to put them back on the plantation. This coming election will hold no suprises.

  7. StDavids! says:

I think this is great for the Party. In addition, My PLP MP Lovitta Foggo is constantly out and about visiting her constituents.

    • LOL (original) says:

      Hi Lovitta ;) …………………

      LOL also St. Davids hahahaha

  8. Fool me once says:

If the Premier actually goes door to door, this is a positive change from the previous leader. OK, this is the opportunity for the people to ask a whole lot a questions and educate the MPs and Party workers about what they want to see improved in Bermuda — not the other way around. They are elected to represent YOU. Seems like a last minute idea to send an email recruiting canvassers when it starts on Saturday. Just sayin.

    • LOL (original) says:

Will they have enough time for everyone to ask questions, 2 days huh……….

      LOL

  9. joe says:

An appeal from the central Executive Officer to general membership to help out with a canvass that is TOMORROW looks like desperation to me. Not at all surprised if the Party’s rank and file are not organized. This is merely a shot across our bows put out by some spin doctor to make us all think we are heading into an election. Is Paula back from her pressing business in Rome then, to actually take part?

  10. crazytalk says:

They have never ever bothered to turn up and talk to me and my wife, and we’ve lived in our current house 10+ years. Every other candidate at least came to see us, even independants. I wonder how the plp ‘pick’ the people they bother to visit?

    • Doesnt says:

I’ve lived in the same location for 33 years and they’ve only come grovelling for my vote once and that was in a by-election held only a few years ago.

If you look at me and my general neighborhood it becomes very obvious how they ‘pick’ the people they visit ..

Who was it that said not too long ago that the PLP neither need or want the white vote ?

      • 04foxache says:

They came to my house in Tamarind Vale.

    • LOL (original) says:

      Membership????????????

      LOL

      • crazytalk says:

So they only go around and talk to their members? We’ve never been members of any party, yet all the others come and talk to us.

    • Watching! says:

      By the colour..of your house!

  11. Me says:

I don’t want those PLP losers knocking on my door! They banged up this island and need to get out!

    • sandgrownan says:

I do want them at my door. They need to understand exactly what the PLP have done to this island. They need to take the blinkers off and be educated.

But they won’t come to my door, because they don’t want my vote.

  12. Sounds like some very strong UBP and OBA persons making extremely negative comments. That tells me that the mentality of the UBP and OBA supporters are all one in the same…so there is really no real different. This is the message that your comments sent to people. Please be aware that this is not new, the PLP canvass every year. Some MP canvass year-around. We live in a society were if you want to see an MP it is not always about someone knocking on your door, but you stepping out to knock call or email, twitter, facebook any form of communication to reach out as well. Particulary, if you want to discuss an issue. Please people where is your maturity, your comments sound so hateful and more of the same. Maybe that is one major reason you are not the government….you fail to accept change…and your negative attitudes and viral words do not help !!

    • crazytalk says:

Special girl, thay haven’t been doing the ‘year round canvassing’ with me, but they are now saying they will be going “door to door” on May 28 and June 4.

Tell you what. On June 5 I’ll let you know whether they came to my door.

      We’ll see.

    • Truth says:

That is a big assumption specialgirl. You are completely leaving out a critical category. Unhappy/disgruntled/dissatisfied former PLP voters, of which, I am one. There are many people in that category. To chalk everyone up as either UBP or OBA is disingenuous and it fails to ackknowledge the poor job that the PLP have done that has turned off many of its own voters. You should think on that.

      • Truth says:

    • Bible Scholar says:

Poor you! You sound really paranoid. I hear dissatisfaction, disillusionment and disgust, not hatred. Perhaps that is part of the problem with the ‘new’ PLP – they really can’t hear what the people, the voters, are actually saying. They have forgotten that they serve the people and need to be seen to be doing so, seen to be interested in what the people are saying and feeling.
I also don’t hear very much of people identifying support for a particular party, just lack of support for the PLP – specifically because they, and I, don’t feel the party supports the people. When everybody is hurting except parliamentarians and civil servants, something is very wrong. When the Premier and her Cabinet can take home more in a week than many people take home in a month, and still not be willing to take a pay cut, something is VERY very wrong. And you think people are blind and should just accept this???? and if we don’t accept it , we are being negative? Doesn’t work that way anymore.

    • LOL (original) says:

What you see is the reaction to percieved racism like it or not your party is as much a part of the racist system that every one except die hard PLP’s and some UBP’s so I’m told but have not seen this in the current crop of opposition politicians want eliminated. You remind me of a cheerleader.

Raw raw PLP PLP all the way f#ck what white has to say raw raw plp do not let the white man win the day. This is what you and your PLP colleges sound like around every election (note I know its note all supporters but when the level headed ones say nothing about this crap it leads to the perception that hating on white is find to do) why can’t you win on the issues Bermuda faces with out this crap.

      LOL

    • Bermyman says:

You have a lot to learn about how to write!!! It was a struggle to read your comments. People are upset because the state of the Country is very poor. By your logic having a very large amount of debt, higher taxes, lower wages, fewer jobs, less tourism, dysfunctional public transport, poor public services, less international business, higher healthcare costs, poorer education, higher crime/murder rate and a large degree of social problems should not be complained about, WE SHOULD ACCEPT CHANGE? The honest to god truth is I do not currently support any party in Bermuda, I think party politics hinder this country more than anything. But in reality I know I will have to choose in the next election and I will in no way choose the PLP. They have dragged this country down in so many ways that I don’t have enough paper to write to you the reasons why. Show your maturity and wake the hell up!

    • sandgrownan says:

At least the buses and ferries are running on time…oh wait. Clowns.

      Can’t even run the buses.

  13. Oh by the way keep it up…as if you think thats a great political strategy.,It tells me alot that you still have not learnt much yet…still have along ways to go……

    • LOL (original) says:

And you have learn nothing in the past 400 years you point.

      LOL

  14. haha says:

well, i often times see my PLP representatives. its the UBP people that have never come to my house. Wayne furbert said that the UBP selects certain amount of black votes that it needs. Guess my black vote wasnt thought to be needed by the UBP/OBA/BDA. My PLP people are very contactable and are out very regularly.

    • Bible Scholar says:

You are in the minority then. Where do you live? I think I’d like to move there

    • LOL (original) says:

They probably know you personally as I’m sure you attend the Plp’s functions or your family.

      LOL

      • LOL (original) says:

Oh and they’ve never been to my door ever no matter where I have been registered from Crawl, Warwick, and now St. David’s yet the opposition vested many times cause I wanted to ask them questions. So I guess the PLP doesn’t need white votes or they choose who they need as well. Politics for ya.

        LOL
        two sides same coin

    • sandgrownan says:

Listening to Furbert is like poking yourself in the eye with a stick. Equally satisfying.

  15. crazytalk says:

If they organise this the same way they organised the Census, it should take about 2 years to get to all of us.

    • haha says:

thats just crazy talk. the census is organised by government workers…the Party and the Government are two totally different entities.

      • crazytalk says:

Really, they’re different are they? Funny how the plp website often looks like a government site.

      • sandgrownan says:

        Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

    • It is possible that you may not have a real interest in meeting or talking to any PLP MP. Be honest and mature to yourself. I am sure you talk to other MPs that you think requires your interest. If you are not truely interested in talking to a PLP MP, why comment. Just be true to yourself and stop the sillyness and negative behaviours. Mature, honest broker will seek to talk to whom ever they feel is most important to them no matter which party they represent.

      • Bermyman says:

‘Be honest and mature to yourself’. Drink the proverbial cool aid! ‘Be honest and mature to yourself’. The world was supposed to end on the 21st of May and the person that told me that also told me to be honest with myself. Did I believe them! NO! As you correctly put it, the PLP is only interested in what is important to THEM! not the PEOPLE of Bermuda, if not then MP’s would have taken pay cuts no problem. Complete and utter bull dust really. Show me real change, show me new tourism, new International business, better education and a reduced debt and then maybe I will look the PLP’s way. Or if I am out of work and need a job that pays over the odds, then maybe I will join the PLP for the hopes of a nice fat ministerial pay check!! That is the current MP’s motivation, money! Not a better Bermuda, more change in de pockets then get out! ‘Someone else’s problem now!’ Just like Ewart!

      • crazytalk says:

I’d absolutely love to talk to them Special Girl. I’d invite them in, close the door behind them, and share opinions. I’ve got a lot to say to them, actually.

The problem is, the cowards never show up. They just want to engage people who slap their backs and yuck it up with them. They want sycophantic yes-men, not real debate.

But like I said above, we’ll see if they show up on May 28 or June 4. I very much doubt it.

      • sandgrownan says:

I’d love to talk to a PLP MP, but they won’t come see me. Cowards.

  16. #### says:

Wasn’t it last month that the Premier stated that she would not call an election in the midst of the countries financial problems? ….or have those problems magically dissapeared? ……. or was that just the normal spin? (Bull)

Truthfully there ain’t one party that’s worth the price of the ballot paper….

    • Rob says:

She is just testing the waters. A lot of bad vibes are circulating the island right now concerning the PLP. Bermudians do tend to forget very quickly. When that happens she will Strike!

      • Ring Master says:

Bermudians do tend to forget quickly – “this too shall pass” springs to mind. However these days matters are hitting people where they see it most -lost jobs, less money, higher prices, no “free” this and that and not all caused by the Global Recession. The impact of good life lived by the politicians and paid for by the grass roots Bermudians is starting to be felt, and the worst is yet to come. Sure a few Cheerleaders takes the mind off things, just as Beyonce did, but they are merely the distraction as used by a magician. Watch this, no not that, as he takes your wallet, watch, ring and other items. A circus act in fact.

        • Rob says:

Yes Beyonce! If you play back the video you will see Bermudians jumping out of their seats ecstatic screaming. I wonder how many of those people are the victims and unemployed right now.

  17. Terry says:

“Election Action Days”. Something is wrong here. They are now just notifying us?

If the BDA hadn’t fallen apart and be morfed into a “OBA” (Only Bermudians Apply) the UBP would still be in the play….(Swans Song).

Once again I am correct in stating that it is all the UBP’s fault.

In fact next week I will be putting out a White Paper (a whole roll of it) to announce the latest party…..detz rite…….

The ‘PLP2′…Since many people are asking to take things into our own hands and take us out and off the Plantation( Farm) I will be launching the Portugese Laborers-2.

People have been kept in and on the farm for too long. People are tired of having to be subjected to overseas produce and products that can be grown locally. We will take over the Pembroke Dump and the Naval Annex (navel oranges grow best there) …

Ferry Reach will be turned into the new Marine and Portable toilets.

The Causeway will be demolished. There is no cause for it.

The Railway Tracks will be upgraded for glass and trash recycling

    Stay tuned for more.

    You can count on PLP2.

  18. Hmmmmm says:

The world must be reading these posts and laughing out loud. All these spoiled, self-important people who need to see, feel, touch, digest a politician to help forge their political ideology and ultimately their vote. Grow up people. What do you need to see these people for? Just to say they came to your house and prove just how important you are? Give me a break. If your political philosophy is up for grabs because of someone’s canvassing then that explains some of the morons currently in the House; elected because they came by; not because they’re talented, not because they have something to contribute but because they happened to have a black and coke in your living room and you could tell all your neighbours that. Make your decisions on what you stand for and who best represents your views. Its not a popularity contest people.sheesh.

    • Larry says:

Very well said. It puts the importance of substance where it belongs and that is at the top. Far too often votes are given simply because of something trivial while more important issues are ignored. But then again that’s exactly what the powers that be want.

    • Hudson says:

Agreed. I’m not interested in entertaining an uninvited visitor while he or she tells me what I want to hear while saying “oh yes, i understand etc etc”. I will vote on what is real:

Today Bermuda has a massive deficit, major unemployment, a shrinking economy, high crime, a disasterous public education system, crumblig infrastructure, a collapsing real estate market and a government promoting rampant racism and intollerace. If the OBA or UBP or any other opposition party presents me with a platform that brings about change to any or all of these issues, they will most likely get my vote.

The sad part is that i liken the next election to that of the US election in 2009. Whoever won that election was doomed as they were taking over a US economy in shambles, unemployment soaring, and a world that hated Americans. It will take Obama (who btw i’m a huge supporter of) his entire term just to turn the US ship around and start the country back on a better course. The next president will reep the rewards as it is likely Obama will lose the next election as ‘change’ hasn’t come fast enough for many. Bermuda is the same – it will take several years of fiscal prudence and some unpopular measures to turn Bermuda back around so that the economy can grow, employment can improve, education can be reformed and social harmony restored.
Don’t think ticking a new box will bring about the change we need overnight – we are a long way down a bad road and life simply isn’t going to get better overnight even if the PLP doesn’t win the next election.

  19. Malachi says:

At this particular point in time I cannot think of one politician that I would welcome at my door.

They can ALL kiss my “you know what”!

  20. Cleancut says:

Why would any of the hundreds of people that were made redundant from their long standing jobs want to vote for the Party that was responsible for it? You can give back a +% of the Taxes but the people are still unemployed.

  21. You folks seem to have a lot of inner healing that you must do !! Your extreme bitterness in clearly in the printed words you write. It is kinda sad that you view the world through dark bitter lenses. It is sad that your not able to objectively discuss issues facing the country in a fashion that does not involve name calling and viral remarks. Sad…I thought that we as a people had come much further in terms of having discourse on a higher level. It appears that many of you have not reached that stage of discourse and dialogue.
