Ball Hockey: Bermuda Win Bronze in Slovakia
Bermuda played Great Britain for third place in Pool B of the Ball Hockey World Championships in Slovakia, and won 6-2 claiming the bronze medal.
Bermuda scored early with Cory Coullette leading the way with a goal in the second minute. Dave Gazzard doubled the score with a goal in the seventh minute as Bermuda took a 2-0 lead into the second period.
However Great Britain were determined to make a game of it and charged back in the second and tied it up at 2 apiece, they got a goal from Ross Duncan in the 19th minute and a goal from Scott Ellard in the 20th minute.
Mr Gazzard said, “Team Bermuda had a spirited 2nd intermission talk in the change room and stormed back in the third playing the kind of hockey they had prepared so long and hard for. In goal for Bermuda was Tony Fitzgerald and he made several key stops in the game and gave confidence to the entire squad.”
Scott Shannon gave Bermuda the lead in the 33rd minute and when Chris Merritt scored one minute later Bermuda was on their way to winning the Bronze. Troy Dort made it 5 – 2 with a goal in the 36th minute and Jeff Ingelman closed out the scoring for Bermuda as they finished 3rd in Pool B.
David Gazzard said, “While we did not achieve our goal of a B Pool Championship we are mindful that we had 11 rookies this year and the tourney gets more competitive each time it is contested. Team Bermuda represented the country proudly and did a fantastic job.”
