Police Seize 15 Cannabis Plants in Devonshire

July 22, 2011

Police have made yet another seizure of cannabis plants, marking the fifth time plants have been seized in the last few weeks. Last night [July 21] officers confiscated 15 cannabis plants from the Cedar Park Road, Devonshire area.

A Police spokesman said, “Around 8pm on Thursday, police attended the Cedar Park Road, Devonshire area after a report of cannabis cultivation. Officers made a seizure of what are believed to be 15 cannabis plants from an outside area. No arrests were made at the scene. Inquiries into this matter are ongoing.”

Police have been seizing marijuana plants at the rate of once every five days for the last few weeks. Last night’s incident follows after the seizure in Sandys two days ago in which 115 plants were found, some 7 feet tall. Less than two weeks prior - on July 14 – officers located cannabis plants in the Tudor Hill, Southampton.

On July 4 plants 5 foot tall were found in the Smith’s Hill Drive, St. David’s area, which was a few days after 4 foot plants were found on June 27 in an undisclosed area in St. David’s. In addition, police seized 250lbs of cannabis in the Warwick area earlier this week.

Should cannabis be decriminalized?

    • bermyshotta says:

@ True Dat – lol kno dat! but guess wah…karma’s worse den de police!

    • YES MATE! says:

Somebody is trying to keep their own a$$ out of jail by pricking on these peaceful farmers or someone who imports weed is pricking on them to eliminate competition. The cops don’t go to these neighborhoods to patrol, they barely go there when called for an emergency. Hey Bermuda Bobbylon Service pat yourselves on the back for solving yet another victimless crime! You guys rock! Now that you’ve mastered the art of tree catching (something landscapers could’ve taught you) why don’t you practice catching murderers, rapists and and burglars? While you’re at it, see if you can do a good job of collecting evidence so we can get convictions in these cases?

  7. Wow! says:

Playing in the trees again, no wonder that bloody 17 year old got off! They must be smoking it to!!!!

    • PEPPER says:

  11. wow#2 says:

bernews where is my last comment?

    • bernews says:

Sorry, that one could get us in legal hot water as we are liable for all things printed. With certain types of subjects, it is better to phrase certain things vaguely or ask questions rather then make statements.

  12. wow#2 says:

ok how about this……@ curious.. i wonder if they smoke it or flip it to make a bigger profit? hmmmm…. Bernews is that better:)

  13. nowayout says:

OK, all these arrests in my opinion could relate to the Bermudians who got a 7 year jail term (if I am correct) in Costa Rica recently and the other two who got arrested on their yacht when they returned to Bermuda. No ways would the BPS have gotten all this information so quickly, without someone talking. I think there are some major plea bargains going on at the moment. But apart from all the above, great job BPS, BUT please make sure you give the prosecution enough evidence to make the cases stick

  14. JAH SON says:

LEGALIZE IT………OR DISCRIMINATE IT AT LEAST……70 PERCENT OF BERMUDIANS SMOKE GANJA…

    • Organic Bermudian says:

I concur Jah Son MANY people use ganja here! Local and guest workers!!

    • LOL says:

      DISCRIMINATE IT?!

      LOL!!!!

  15. True Bermudian says:

Education and rehabilitation are far more cost effective and helpful to society than trying to combat a losing battle.

  16. LOL says:

In my OPINION this is all posturing before the elections.

Let’s be honest, the policy in place at the moment against marijuana is a failed policy. They can’t stop people from obtaining the marijuana. They’re only making it slightly more difficult at best.

If not for “electioneering” purposes, then I’d bet that the government or a few key government figures (of past and present) are importing the marijuana and the home grown suppliers are cutting into their profits. This is seen as a challenge to their cash flow and they’re making examples of their “competition”.

Think about the economics of the situation for just a few minutes and you’ll realize there is incredible motive for governmental corruption.

They could import it and sell it to the public for a HUGE PROFIT. They then could catch a % of the public and charge them with possession (amongst other things…which gives them “good PR” to deliver to the media who drink the Kool-Aid with their eyes shut and their wallets open), confiscate the drug in question, fine them some stupid amount, and then could sell it back to whomever for an additional HUGE PROFIT. All the while they’re sitting in their mansions with no ties to any illegal activity, enjoying their freedom and financial safety.

REMEMBER THOUGH, that’s all speculation and my opinion. But one thing is for sure, whoever is in charge is having their cake and eating it too.

So no matter what the polls say, marijuana won’t be decriminalized anytime soon because it’s far more profitable as a criminal activity for those who are in power.

And just a suggestion to the editors of Bernews, perhaps putting the poll up on the front page might provide a larger and more accurate view of the people’s opinion.

    • bernews says:

Agree, issue is space. The only place we could put it is on the bottom right – under the ‘Daily Archives’. Not sure many will see it there either. Perhaps we should test the next one to see.

    • Bryan says:

      Well said…

  17. US Observer says:

    Great Work Bernews!!

  18. Shut Yo Mouth... says:

    Grow grapes … Make wine…

  19. HotTamali says:

LEGALIZE IT!!!!Alcohol Kills more then Marijuana!!!! Take that gross sh*t off the shelves! SHIiiiiiiiiiii

  20. YES MATE! says:

Whenever the subject of legalization comes up everybody goes silent. The fact is that in Bermy everyone is okay with people smoking herb. Think about it! How many people do you know who smoke weed? We all know at least ten. Even those of us who don’t draw really don’t care. Have you ever been so offended by people smoking that you called the cops on them? Probably not. When the subject comes up the only people to make any noise is the church, and those lot all know at least ten smokers that they don’t turn in to the cops either. The government will not take the initiative to decriminalize weed, so it is up to us, the people who don’t have a problem with weed and the people who smoke it to force our government to decriminalize the sh!t. I don’t draw but if it was put to a vote I would be in favour of legalization for herb. If you want to smoke, grow it yourself. This takes all the value away from it and it will truly be just a weed with little to no monetary value and there will be an equal amount of crime associated with it – little to none.

    • bermyshotta says:

@ YES MATE! – lol close-minded ppl like Notorious care guys take a draw.

    • FridayGirl says:

I don’t totally agree with that. If you make it legal then what will this guys who have been selling it all these years do for money? Don’t say go get a job cause we all know that it ain’t that easy. What do you say when you go on an interview and the only job experience you have is “slanging dope” sure that looks great on a resume. Try walking in their shoes, you have rent to pay children to support and other bills that come with being an independent adult. With weed bin legal and no job what are you left to do. You can’t exactly get a “crackhead” to write you a reference letter.

  21. M3ke says:

And what is really so bad about growing marijuana?

  22. Shaking the Head says:

The Government has been promoting “Buy Bermuda”. So some enterprising people have been trying to meet this demand and look what happens!

  23. wondering says:

biggest bunch of hogwash……………;legalize it blah blah blah…..us narrow minded simpletons will keep blowing the legalize it horn.

who in earth you think the 114 kilos and heroin and coke was for? the same n$#@!rs that were being persecuted 400 years ago! go figure

  24. The Truth Hurts says:

The bottom line is that when somebody calls the police with a report of herb growing, of course they are going to come out and collect it. Why the fuss? A member of public calls, they react. Many are complaining about staking the place out and making an arrest – you are all double talking – the moment the police invest numerous officer hours in to something like that with somebody getting arrested you will all complain that it was “only herb” and a waste of tax payers money. Make up your mind. I for one am happy that somebody calls the police, they come out, grab the stash and continue on their day.

  25. Takbir Sharrieff says:

Fantastic Observation…..why waste time on convictions and gathering evidence etc….if there is a hard headed segment of the public who want trash.!Just pick it up like the Garbage Collection Trucks and take it to the dump and expose of it by burning..if the owner/s want it come to the Police station and sign for it ..then the Police can take their proceeds of crime benefits from them and help the economy after they convict them. The people reporting them to crime stoppers are getting paid so its a win win situation. The money paid out to the neighbors ..and wives ..and girlfriends…..can help pay the groceries..feed the neglected babies and also get the nuisances out of the neighbors…. neighbor…hood.Land value will increase on their property…Bermuda Wins…..boost to economy…new Bermuda Green. Those greedy rats rubbing their hands in glee waiting to de-criminalise ganja will just have to stand by the dump and draw …their breath…free high.!

    • Geza says:

You’re kidding me right? you know who stands to lose the most from a decriminalized cannabis right? The people who are selling it on the black market right now!

    • YES MATE! says:

      Takbir you are a blank.

  26. Takbir Sharrieff says:

With Respect to the readers of my responses so I can make myself abundantly clear…I am totally against legalizing or decriminalizing….ganja…. marijuana….weed for any amount ….it is illegal and and misused for profit…greed …and it has taken its toll on thousands of people old and young..families and communities..robbed people of their potential to rise to their full potential…and its addictive and intoxicating effect is widespread. My satire in some of my responses may evade you but the message goes clearly to the right minded people ….unless one is a blank…read my comments clearly and objectively….and the cloud will come clearly to light.Consider the youth for which the adult is supposed to show leadership to and be a role model…..you are throwing you future generations under the bus….! Do’nt blame your children if they go astray….you’re leading them there..ponder and consider they are just following in your footsteps cause they love you …..and your’re leading them in the wrong direction and blaming them for going astray…..this will haunt you for the rest of your life….guaranteed.!Yes Mate.!

    • Geza says:

brah…its easier for these young people being held back as you right now then it would be if it was regulated and sold like alcohol. you make absolutely no sense and im starting to think your just out here trolling..

    • FridayGirl says:

You can’t be serious. My mother is a crackhead that sold her daughters just to get a fix. She was abusive and negligent. I never even finished high school. As a child i had to survive by any means.
As an adult i am proud to say that i have never touched any drugs, i have a great job and have the biggest kindest heart in the world.
Fact is, it don’t matter who your parents are or what they did everyone has their own mind for a reason. if you want better for yourself then go and get it. Don’t use the way you were raised as an excuse to be a “bad seed”.

  27. FridayGirl says:

I WISH A M*****F***ER WOULD!!! LOL!! Obviously there is a reason that they were growing trees!!! Lesson on live “bird brains” the harder you make live for the lower class people the harder it becomes for the upper class. Government is such idiots.
