Videos: Island Games Athletes Return Home
Last night [July 2] a number of Bermuda’s athletes returned home on the British Airways flight after doing the island proud at the 2011 Island Games in the Isle of Wight, U.K.
The Gold Medal winning Men’s Basketball Team is pictured below at the airport last night. Their successful defence of the title gives Bermuda the distinction of being the first island to win back to back Gold Medals in basketball. You can watch a short clip of the final basketball game, the team cutting down the net and the medal ceremony here.
Bermuda picked up an impressive 18 medals in total – spanning athletics, golf, sailing, with Gold medal performances in sailboarding, tennis and basketball.
In addition Bermuda was represented in a number of other disciplines such as squash, cycling, volleyball, badminton, archery, as well as shooting – where we fielded one of the oldest competitors to ever enter the Island Games – 79-year-old sharpshooter Nelson Simons.
