Hatherley & Orchard Win Cycling Champs

October 12, 2011

Mark Hatherley proved his recent form is no fluke, finishing top Bermudian and second overall in the IBC Criterium Championships on Sunday. Visiting UK rider Scott Tomkinson, riding for Team Fast Forward Bicycle Works, was first, delivering his team’s first win of the year. Brian Drea of Team Madison finished third.

From the gun Team Madison had the 38 riders who lined up to contest the 55-minute race seeing red, setting a high pace that dispatched most challengers early on. The race took in a course that started on Front Street, turned around at the Bird Cage, climbed Burnaby Hill and Reid Street, before turning down onto Court Street and back onto Front Street.

The race came down to nine riders at the end – Greg Hopkins and Hatherley from Winner’s Egde, Tomkinson and Neil De ste Croix from Bicycle Works, Mark Lombardi from Team Tokio, and Madison riders, Brian Drea, Neil Lupsic, Andrew Steele, and Greg Reid.

The decisive move came with four laps to go when Tomkinson, Hatherley and Drea broke away going up Burnably Hill. This left Mark Lombardi to chase as the other five riders had teammates up the road. At the line Tomkinson took the sprint ahead of Hatherley and Drea only a few seconds ahead of the chase.

In the women’s race Laurie Orchard was the top Bermudian ahead of Earlena Ingham of Team Focus and Stacey Babb of Team Crime Stoppers. However, it was Karen Bordage, of Team Winner’s Edge, who normally competes in the top men’s category, who put on her stamp on the race, leading from start to finish.

In the junior boys race, Treshun Correia of Team Winner’s Edge was first to attack forcing Team Madison’s Dominique Mayho and Caribbean Champion to follow. Corriea soon pulled up due to an injury and Mayho won the race. Vashon Cann of Fast Forward Bicycle Works took second and Mark Godfrey of Team Winner’s Edge took third.
