The City of Hamilton announced the following road closures will be put in place on Saturday [Dec.10] to facilitate the large number of spectators expected to gather on Front Street to watch this year’s Christmas Boat Parade.

Point Pleasant Road at Albuoy’s Point will be closed to all traffic from 4:00 pm until 9:00pm.

From 3:00pm to 9:00pm, there will be no parking at the following locations: the south side of Front Street, from Parliament Street to Point Pleasant Road; Point Pleasant Road and Albuoy’s Point; Number 1 and Number 5 Car Parks.

However access will only be granted to vehicles transporting disabled and elderly people and some seating will be available.

Horse and carriages will not be allowed access to the horse canopy and taxis will not be permitted to use the No.1 car park taxi stand.

Between 5:00pm and 9:30pm licensed food vendors, with permits, will be operating on Front Street, at Albuoy’s Point, under the Horse Canopy and at the Taxi Stand in front of Number 1 Car Park.

A large number of spectators are expected to attend this year’s boat parade and motorists are urged to park in City Hall Car Park, Par-La-Ville Car Park, Elliott Street car park or Bulls Head car park.

I am the skipper of one of the parade marshal boats & a 9 year veteran of actually participating in the parade.

To the skippers of participating boats, please, please, please arrive in good time to get yourself slotted into position. Arriving in the harbour 5 minutes before start time, not having a clue of where to be, creates havoc & makes you look extremely inconsiderate. It has happened before.

If you have a high number, you have no business being anywhere near to start. The highest numbered boats will be way down by Red Hole at the start. Thats where they were 2 years ago. Make an estimate of where you are supposed to be from that. This year, with eveen more boats. Parade setup will be more difficult than ever.

Hold the music till after you are in position to start so that you can hear your radio. Very important. Communication during setup is very important. Keep it brief. You are not on your cellphone. If you don’t find where you are supposed to be call for somebody, anybody, in your group number, e.g. the 30s, to answer & tell you where they are.

Doing the parade is huge fun, the biggest spectator on the Island by a long shot. Lets make it safe & professional without huge gaps but without tailgating each other too. It is a skippers challenge. Close proximity to other boats, night operation unfamiliar to many, lights restricting visibility never mind other distractions & alcohol.

See you out there. I will be one of the little boats trying to help you out before the start & keeping it all moving, in my little area anyhow, during the parade.
