Cricket: Bermuda Lose To Denmark

March 13, 2012

David Hemp won the toss and Bermuda decided to bat first in their opening ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier against Denmark today [Mar.13] in the United Arab Emirates.

Bermuda got off to a bad start with Lionel Cann out without scoring going LBW to Bashir Shah. However opener Dion Stovell and Hemp then put on a 74 run partnership in 13 overs, but from there wickets fell on a regular basis with Bermuda scoring 116 from their allotted 20 overs.

Stovell was the top scorer with 56, while Hemp was the only other batsmen in double figures with 36. Kamau Leverock added 8 runs and Janeiro Tucker scored 7.

In reply Denmark scored 117/3 with five balls to spare, Frederick Klokker was their top scorer with 50 before being run out, while Rizwan Mahmood was not out on 47, Mahmood hit three fours and three sixes in his 49 ball innings. Stovell led the bowling for Bermuda with figures of 4-0-20-1, while Rodney Trott bowled 4-0-25-1.

David Moore, coach of Bermuda was  disappointed with today’s loss saying, “It was a disappointing start. Our lengths when bowling were not good at all. We gave them too much width as well. When batting we were going well with Dion Stovell and David Hemp doing well for us. But unfortunately we lost momentum between 5th and 10th over.

“Then David Hemp’s run-out set us back. When Stovell and Hemp were batting we were looking at a total of 130-odd which would have been par for us this pitch since it was a bit low and slow. But it was not to be. If you see we played lesser number of dot balls than them and hit more boundaries. Yet we lost. So we have learnt something from this.”

“It was a disappointing start?” Not having favoritism or suggesting any one talent is greater than another; but were there injuries?
From the report, the make up of the team seemed to have an unusual balance. We have batsman that did not bat (and 8 players batted), and bowlers (all-rounder) that did not play. Cricinfo shows BDA losing by 7 wickets, however Denmark taking 19.1 overs to pass the score. Taking a batsman and not using him, and having a bowling all-rounder available who strikes the ball later in the innings is mind boggling.
Again, was the touring party changed or do we have injury, discipline issues.

We just have a lame coaching staff who are lost. They will be lucky if they win more then two matches. I bet the batting line up will change every game stay tuned.
