Greenrock Expo To Mark Earth Hour
Bermuda environmental group Greenrock will mark Earth Hour on Saturday [Mar. 31] with a Hamilton exposition featuring green exhibitors, documentaries, healthy food options, power-generating bicycles and entertainment including local singers and fire spinners
The Earth Hour Expo will be taking place from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. at City Hall.
A free community event, the Earth Hour Expo seeks to raise awareness on sustainable living in Bermuda through green exhibitors and entertainment, and is made possible through the generous support of sponsors Bacardi, PartnerRe, BTC, ACE, Zurich, Appleby, Waterfront Properties Limited, Butterfield & Vallis and Hiscox.
Greenrock management committee member Eugene Dean commented: “This year’s Earth Hour Expo seeks to showcase simple solutions to climate change, now a global crisis, while providing more avenues for raising awareness about its harmful effects. Living more sustainable lifestyles is something that each of us can achieve, hence our commitment to supporting initiatives of this nature as we seek to change mindsets in our island home.”

Mr. Dean added: “With several other notable events taking place during the day this Saturday, the Earth Hour Expo has been scheduled during the evening hours and designed to provide the entire community with an opportunity to take part in Bermuda’s version of the largest environmental action in history.
“Starting at 5pm, there will be green exhibitors, compelling documentaries, live entertainment, kid-friendly activities, healthy food options, power-generating bicycles and a breathtaking “lights out celebration” from 8:30 – 9:30pm. Bring your flashlight and enjoy the fun!”
Free documentary screenings inside City Hall Theatre for the whole family to enjoy will be Tapped (5 PM), a film about the bottled water industry, and Bag It (6:30 PM), a film highlighting the impact of plastic on our environment and our daily lives.
BELCO engineers will feature their power-generating pedal bikes built specifically for Earth Hour to demonstrate how much energy it takes to power LED light bulbs.
Green exhibitors at City Hall will share information about their sustainable products and services, including Bermuda Janitorial Supplies, BGA Wholesale Distributors, BAE (part of the BAC group of companies), Norwex Enviro Products, KBB, Thermax Bermuda, thegreenhousebermuda, PureNERGY Renewables Ltd, Butterfield & Vallis, Department of Energy and more.

Live entertainment includes Joy T. Barnum, Christina Quinn, Val Sherwood, Jules & Aswad, Live Wires, Princess Black, Rivah and Gavin “Sundjata” Smith performing acoustic sets on the steps of City Hall, followed by Bermuda Donquilli, Capoeira Camarà, Fire Spinners and Dawn & The Rhythm Fire Drummers during the lights out celebration.
This year is the fourth year that Greenrock has led Earth Hour in Bermuda.
Since 2007, Earth Hour has been celebrated globally by hundreds of millions of people in over 130 countries, serving as a visual referendum on the importance of a sustainable lifestyle – that is, turning lights off for one hour to be a part of the largest environmental action in history.
