Turks & Caicos Politicians Appear In Court

March 21, 2012

Two politicians were granted $175,000 bail when they appeared in a Turks and Caicos Court on corruption charges last month, reports the island’s local media.

The leader of the Progressive National Party [PNP] and former Speaker of House Clayton Greene and former government minister McAllister Hanchell, were each granted $175,000 bail when they appeared in a Turks and Caicos Court on corruption charges.

Mr Greene is facing three money laundering charges; entering into a money laundering arrangement, acquiring proceeds from criminal conduct, and handling proceeds from criminal conduct. Both Mr Greene and Mr Hanchell have issued public statements saying they are innocent of the allegations.

The UK suspended elected government in the Turks and Caicos in 2009 after allegations of widespread government corruption. In August 2009 the TCI Governor, on the instructions of the UK Foreign Office, imposed direct rule on the by authority of the 18 March 2009 Order-in-Council issued by the Queen. The islands’ administration was suspended and power was transferred to the Governor.

Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory along with Bermuda and 12 other jurisdictions. Settled by Bermudians in the late 17th century, the territory was a virtual Bermuda dependency for more than a century and the centre of a profitable salt-raking industry.

Bermudian slave Mary Prince spent time in the Turks & Caicos Islands, an experience she described in her historic 1831 memoir.

There’s been a real shortage of Garlick on this island for far too long. Its pretty obvious we can’t grow our own so maybe we can borrow one from England.

Doesn’t it just make you think that the PLP and PNP are just ran by the same people.

After they’re finished with these two excuses of life, England can then come and deal with the people who are responsible for making Bermuda terrible.

You see what a Royal Commission of Inquiry can do? It can retrieve evidence to put crooked politicans behind bars, but the Governor still tells me that we don’t need one. I told him that we do and now I think he is mad at me but I don’t care!!!

The only think I am afraid of is that if we take too long in getting this RCI, all the evidence might be shredded.
