Man Receives 15 Day Sentence For Assault

April 18, 2012

After pleading guilty to a charge of assault, Senior Magistrate Archie Warner sent 47-year-old unemployed man Dion Burgess to jail for fifteen days.

Around 6:00pm on April 16th, Mr Burgess had assaulted another person by striking him. The victim had greeted Mr Burgess and Mr Burgess had responded by telling the person to move his bike, after which the matter quickly deteriorated and Mr Burgess struck the man.

Police were called, arrived on scene, and arrested Mr Burgess and took him to the station lock-up, where he was kept overnight and produced yesterday morning [Apr.17].

Admitting to the Magistrate that he was drunk at the time, Mr Burgess also admitted that he couldn’t remember much of the incident.

Holding up a thick file, Magistrate Warner said: “This is a book. Twelve pages of convictions with the last one just ten days ago.” With that, the Magistrate imposed a fifteen day prison sentence.

Assaults a person just 10 days after commiting an offence and gets 15 days (???) -I need sky hooks to close to my mouth. What the heck is going on in the Courts.
One person stabs a relative multiple times and gets 5 yrs and another one commits a similar offence and gets what was it, 3 yrs. Stabbing is an offence no matter how many times. Unhonest to goodness, something is not right!

Not saying he was right to do it, and making no comment on the sentence…he hit the man, he didn’t stab him.

No wonder he keeps doing it, 15 days is not enough. 10 years would be more like it.

It seems every government is hell bend to destroy the structure of society. The tolerances seem to become higher and higher for foolishness as society pays the price. I say its time to get tough on crime. We need TO punish those that do wrong, no matter who they are, according to the laws that the nation agrees to set. Next, we need to then stick by the same laws for all offenders to be judged by. If it’s 25 years mandatory for a gun crime, then let it be that (even if the gun is made of rubber) let’s punish the intent of the possession. The only way is to be consistent and firm, yet fair. A weak government (don’t matter who), makes for a confused, weak people. A strong government builds a united people. Simple.

Lock the man up long enough for him to dry out. Then start mandatory social training. Helping this long time offender to help himself (rehabilitate). Otherwise, keep him locked up, so he will not be a further menace to society. We seem to be a society of enablers. We seem to be good at helping people to continue in the life style that leads them to prison repeatedly. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm……….
