Meet 2012 Miss Devonshire: Lene Hypolite

June 15, 2012

In the first of a series of profiles of contestants, Bernews today spotlights Lene Hypolite who is representing Devonshire Parish in the upcoming Miss Bermuda Pageant.

The Warwick Academy graduate has a Bachelor of Arts in Bilingual Economics from York University, and is fluent in Spanish and also speaks some French and Portuguese. She says she believes “breaking language barriers can lead to more opportunities and experiences, especially in today’s international society.”

Recently inducted as a member of the Phi Beta Delta honor society for international scholars, Miss Hypolite is currently enrolled at Georgia State University pursing a Masters of Arts in Economics and Policy. She also work as a Graduate Research Assistant and volunteers at West End Academy and Cook Elementary School as a math and economics tutor.

This summer she is working at the Bermuda Monetary Authority as an intern in Policy Research, which she called an “awesome opportunity that allows me to apply my studies directly to the internship.”

She has also started a Spanish tutoring company on a part tie basis called ‘Learn Spanish Bermuda’, where students young and old are exposed to the Spanish language and culture.

Her hobbies include travelling, learning new languages and cultures, teaching others about Bermuda, keeping fit, acting/theatre, cooking and more.

Miss Hypolite previously participated in the Rotary Exchange program, where she was awarded the opportunity to travel around South America for a year, visiting Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil.

“It was during this year that I realized how many people in the world did not have the basic necessities that we sometimes take for granted,” said Miss Hypolite.

Miss Hypolite is a past winner of the Miss Hal Jackson’s Talented Teen Bermuda Scholarship competition and went on to represent Bermuda in the International Competition in St. Maarten, which she called a “very rewarding experience.”

Asked why she entered Miss Bermuda, she said “I see the Miss Bermuda Pageant as not only a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain global exposure but also a great platform to effect positive change within my community, as the title of Miss Bermuda is a position that has the ability to touch many people in our society.

“In addition, representing Bermuda internationally at the Miss World Pageant would be an honor and privilege that I’ve always had a strong desire for. If I am bestowed the honor of receiving the title I will demonstrate through my actions, just as those before me have, that Miss Bermuda is about more than just physical beauty. It involves using my skills and talents to uphold a standard of excellence in our society, and empowering our community to do the same.”

Asked what she has enjoyed about the experience so far, said, “I’ve enjoyed the workshops that we have had. From etiquette, to resume writing, we have been afforded many opportunities to develop our personal and professional skillset.

“I also enjoy practicing with the other contestants. It is exciting to see the caliber of young intelligent and charismatic women that are in the pageant, Bermuda should be very proud. Although we are in competition, I feel as though there is a lot we can learn from each other.”

Asked whether she was nervous or excited about getting onstage for the pageant, said: “I am excited about being on stage! The whole experience has been so much fun, and I cannot wait for Bermuda to see all the hard work that we have put into this production. ”

The 2012 Miss Bermuda Pageant is scheduled to take place Sunday July 8th, at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel where reigning queen Jana Outerbridge will crown her successor. Tickets are on sale now here on bdatix.bm, with ticket prices of $65 for General Admission [level 3], $85 for Gold [level 2] and $105 for Patron [level 1]. View all our Miss Bermuda coverage here.
