Free Public Health Talk On Gynaecologic Cancer
]September is Gynaecologic Cancer Awareness Month and Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is urging all women to learn how to prevent and detect women’s cancers, take note of common symptoms, and act quickly to seek care from their physicians if there are concerns or questions.
To help increase awareness of Gynaecologic Cancers, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will host a free public talk that explains the risks, symptoms and preventive measures of the five major cancers of the female reproductive system: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. The event will be held on Thursday, September 6th @ 5:45pm at The Cathedral of Most Trinity Hall.
‘Just being a woman puts us at risk of developing gynaecologic cancer and this risk increases with age.’ says Rhonda Smith-Simmons Education Officer at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. ‘However there are some risk factors which women can control such as: quit smoking, reducing exposure to the HPV virus, and keeping up to date with your cervical smear tests.’
Every woman is at risk for developing a gynaecologic cancer. An estimated 88,000 new cases will be diagnosed and approximately 64,000 women will die from gynecologic cancers in the US in 2012.
During the month of September Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will focus increased emphasis on helping women understand the steps they can take to reduce the risks for these cancers and receive the earliest possible diagnosis through symptom recognition.
The Charity also houses an extensive resource and lending library of books and DVD’s on cancer and other health topics including gynaecologic cancers. Material can be signed out of the library free of charge.
