Emergency Road Works On Reid Street
[Updated] A small section of the road on Reid Street – right by Bank of Butterfield – appears to have caved in this afternoon [Aug 28], and Corporation of Hamilon employees are presently on the scene working on the problem.
We have asked the Corporation for a statement, and will update as able.
Update 5.14pm: Quick video below, please note it starts out with loud noise so you may wish to adjust your volume.
A police traffic advisory said: “Motorists are advised that due to roadwork currently underway in the area, a section of Reid Street near the junction with Burnaby Street in the City of Hamilton has been reduced to one lane until further notice.”
Update 8.45pm: A statement from the City said: “The City of Hamilton today announced that road works are taking place on Reid Street, outside of Butterfield Bank. Motorists are asked to use extreme caution in the area, and follow posted signs, as City of Hamilton staff work to repair a hole in the road.
“During rush hour traffic on Wednesday morning, there will be two lanes of traffic on Reid Street with the left lane moving to the parking lane to ensure traffic continues to flow. The City of Hamilton apologizes for any inconvenience caused.”
Maybe they found a pot of gold down there.
I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often, considering the deporable condition of our roads!!!!! Soon, someone is going to be seriously injured by this government’s neglect! Be proactive rather than reactive! Hamilton alone is FILTHY and the roads are HORRIBLE! I’m beginning to think that those in charge don’t appreciate the beauty around us! This island is looking worse by the minute with all its over-grown weeds, etc.
And yet another opportunity to take shots at the government!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give it a break . . . smart one look at who’s fixing the road . . .
Take shots at the Corporation not government!! Govt has nothing to do with any maintenance within the city! Think before you type!!
@ Awake-as others have already informed your ignorant little mind, the streets within the city of Hamilton borders are the responsibility of the Corporation of Hamilton.
Furthermore, this stuff happens overseas in the U.S. on a regular basis so why don’t you try criticizing their Governments as well while you’re at it…
I’ve lived in Newark, Boston, DC and Los Angeles. I’ve traveled to London and Paris from the time I was a teenager. And have frequented PR, the US and British VI….all that to say that the City of Hamilton’s streets and cleanliness is HANDS DOWN better. @ awake you woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
Isn’t this right outside of The Butterfield Bank and not across from it as mentioned?
Wasn’t the best phrasing we must admit, we just amended it…
@ Awake
You are a complete IDIOT to say the least. THE Streets within the City are and always have been maintained by the Corp of Hamilton.
So before you go Government hating, check ya facts mate.
This is what happens when you’re too cheap to pave a whole stretch of road and pave in little sections at a time smdh. How about they look at the intersection outside of hsbc on Church street. That seems to be sinking at different levels too. Maybe it’s a conspiracy between government and the car dealers to screw up the suspension on cars and force us to buy more Stupid Ugly Vehicles(SUV) just to get around the city.
LMAO!!! You can’t be serious, can you?!
If there’s a hole in the road someone should look into it.
I agree.
I thought it was the city of hamilton and not government who dealt with city issues? Sheeshums bie get ya ish right
Some of the city roads are horrible ie: The stretch of Reid St. right down to the entrance of the National Library is a disgrace!!! The around by Quicky Lickie Laundry. Outside of the city, the stretch of south shore from Tee St to Point Finger road. Please pave these streets!
The Canadians who now own the bank took the huge vault that was under that section of the road and shipped it back to Toronto for inspection .
Told those guys they would have to tunnel deeper to get to the vault.
Lol, anyway lucky no one was on the spot when it caved in
Banana…. Republic
All of these hurtful comments, just because of a hole in the road, people are very disgusting. What ever happened to being fair and normal, Always lookin for something negative to say.
Yikes…i thouht we were coming up under the HM Customs employee lockers down Front…no doobies for us
Wayne Furbert for Premier!!!
@ Awake and others like you, clearly you truly aren’t awake, this sort of thing happens regularly in other countries so I wonder why people like you are always hating on Bermuda? I have visited numerous other cities in the world and Bermuda has some of the best damn small (lol) roads I have ever seen. Big up Bermy. Bermp Bermp.
I agree! Guess some of these people never travel to other islands. Though our bumps and patches may be annoying, that is nothing compared to their roads!
I thought that the gov. took over the Corporation of hamilton. just saying
There are pots of gold under the streets leading in and out of Hamilton…
is a rumor i heard ….expect the BIU will be “Fixing the Potholes” vehemently in the near future lol…
No one seems to have noticed the perfect square hole under the rubble. Seems to me that it was man made before it was actually filled in, because I seriously doupt that nature carved that perfect 90 degree angle.
