Website Offering Bullet Proof Vests Shuts Down

September 5, 2012

Shortly after launching, the IslandArmor website has been closed down with those behind it posting a message on the site claiming they had not sold anything and the website was “intended to be a demo to pitch the idea of a Body Armor supplier in Bermuda” and that “due to the public response this idea is closed forever.”

The bullet proof vests were listed from $600 to $800, with ‘Buy Now’ buttons featured on the website. The link for the IslandArmor website was originally left as a comment on the Bernews article on the recent Woody’s firearm incident, with the domain name having been registered in May 2012.

When contacted by Bernews last week they declined to identify themselves, saying they would like to remain anonymous. They also declined to provide information about their sales to date.

In explaining their business they said: “We can not be 100% accurate as to who we sell our products to, but our products are not intended to take lives, but to save them. We can not guarantee that they won’t fall into the hands of criminals, but if someone feels their life is threaten they should be able to protect themself.”

The website was taken down yesterday evening, and our emailed request for comment last night was not answered.

The concept prompted close to 90 comments on Bernews, with some feeling the idea was fine, others suggesting the business should be closely monitored, while some took the idea further and said firearms should be legalized so the general public can protect themselves against criminals.

    • Well says:

And is that a problem? At least you’d actually be getting something for that dollar. I’m surprised its taken this long.

  7. Future says:

The headline is a typo bernews. It should read “Brain Behind Website Offering Bullet Proof Vests Shuts Down”

  8. you know I would like to see Bernews do a roast at some point because you got to agree that some of the comments we read is some what way out in left central and then darn right funny and some very rude but lets make light of the time we are given and I guarantee you, comments that some make and comments against some would be hillarious.

side note I bet the most talked about will be LF and EB and I guess I would be in the run up way down the line, but I am relieved to know that we have these people that has choosen to take it’s site down but it does not mean that they can not still sell the items to Bermudians and that is what we need clarified by the powers that be.

  9. Hmmm says:

Whois information from the website names “Antonio Sila” as the administrative contact, but his address is listed as a residential neighborhood in Torrance California. Probably not the actual person behind the website.

  10. @Work says:

Me thinks that the police contacted IslandArmor and convinced them to cease offering theses products. 9mm vs Kevlar, last thing Bermuda needs is a gunman wearing body armor shooting it out with the police.

    • enterprise says:

why bother shutting down the site? the criminals are already inporting guns anyway. what’s to stop them from importing their own body armour? They didn’t need a website to bring their guns in.

  11. Brian says:

Are there any laws prohibiting the items being imported in anyway?

Way to stick your heads in the sand people.

  12. body vest says:

body vest are still for sale.. clearly he doesnt know the people that want them so they had to broadcast it…

  13. Free says:

Sounds like someone with too much time on their hands who were just looking for 15 minutes of fame, however that probably quickly changed when the police came knocking.

  14. duh says:

Its obvious the police set it up 2 catch guyz!!! Duh!

  15. F#ckin Idiots. Guyz be f#$kin untouchable with those vests! Gunman+vest+gun= trouble. Bermudian police already have bad aim. Guyz with vest will make them have to hit the head, arms, or below de waist. XD
