The full statement from the Board of Governors of Cedarbridge Academy is below:

On Tuesday January 29th, 2013, the Board of Governors and the Principal of the Cedarbridge Academy were made aware of potential gang related graffiti in one of the bathrooms via one of our media sources. The graffiti was an announcement of an affiliation to one of the better known entities.

The Cedarbridge Academy would like it to be very clear that it is a center of success and it is a center of education. All of those affiliated with Cedarbridge Academy recognize that we play a tremendous role in the shaping of the minds of our young people. We are keenly aware that as part of the community of Bermuda that we have to take all forms of anti-social behavior very seriously and continue to create the environment of learning that produces successful students.

Our students are some of the best the island produces and the majority of Cedarbridge is meeting the standards necessary for success.

Cedarbridge currently addresses this form of behavior in a proactive manner. Cedarbridge Academy is member of Peaceful Schools International [http://peacefulschoolsinternational.org]. Cedarbridge has active programmes in place such as Chain Reaction and Peer Mediation that seek to address some of the anti social behavior activities. Additionally Cedarbridge implemented in September 2012 a graffiti control program that has seen a significant reduction in the graffiti incidents at the facility.

  • The Graffiti Control Program operates all the following guidelines
  • All bathrooms are checked on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Where graffiti is discovered, the matter is reported to the Command Center during the day.
  • During the evening security do checks during their patrols and email all graffiti discoveries.
  • Maintenance is responsible for the removal of all reported graffiti as soon as possible.

The Minister of Public Safety announced, “an anti-gang programme, implemented at all levels of the school system in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, at a press conference.

“The programme will seek to help students avoid gang membership, violence and delinquent behaviour, and teaches students how to resist gang pressure and develop positive attitudes to law enforcement,” said Minister Dunkley

“In addition, teachers and principals will be well equipped to recognise at-risk behaviour and make early interventions to prevent what has become the shocking exposure of younger and younger children to the gang lifestyle.”

The Cedarbridge Academy welcomes the introduction of such programmes so that our students can continue to learn in a safe environment, so that our young people can get the assistance that they need to build their resistance to the lure of anti-social activities. Such programmes will assist our parents, teachers, staff and students in collecting the tools and resources needed to continue to excel in our education environment.

  1. Seriously though says:

Now, you are aware off this, The Board need to do more than this, and ask the current students and those who have left about gang affiliations in this institutions. The hallways are divided too… country, town …

    • chief says:

It will always be divided unfortunately we jus should have left all the secondary schools

    • Student says:

I will agree that the Board should do more than this to stop things from getting worse then they already are. However, coming from a CedarBridge student I would like to to point out that the Country, Town gang involvement at this school is completely bogus.

  2. Custodial Services says:

Does this mean the bathrooms are not checked on Tuesdays and Thursdays? So there is the potential for filth and trash to accumulate for 2 days because no one is cleaning them? How hard is it for a staff member to do a walk-through daily? Cheezums, even MickeyD’s checks their bathroom every hour.

  3. Ladeej says:

Let’s give CBA’s board some credit for addressing the issue. It’s easy to say that we should have left the school system the way it was. Hindsight is 20/20. Now we have to work with what we have and strive to improve it. I’d like for Minister Dunkley tell us more about this anti-gang programme please. Will it be in all schools? Who will run the programme? We need to be concerned with prevention.

  4. Xman says:

I thought they had CCTY Cameras — if they don’t than they would need to get some.
Is anybody on patrol or on security up there.

  5. Buck says:
