Premier, Ministers Attending RIMS In Los Angeles

April 22, 2013

Premier Craig Cannonier is attending the 49th Annual Risk and Insurance Management Society [RIMS] Conference & Exhibition in Los Angeles, California which is being held from April 21-24. He is accompanied by the Minister of Finance Bob Richards and the Minister of Business Development Dr Grant Gibbons.

Nearly nine thousand risk management and insurance professionals are expected to attend the Conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center to receive relevant information regarding a myriad of topics related to the risk and insurance industry. Bermuda is also represented by members of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Business Bermuda, ABIC and ABIR.

Premier Cannonier said, “I’m very excited to be here at RIMS to represent Bermuda and generate further interest in doing business in Bermuda. It’s a wonderful opportunity to network with people from all across the United States who are shopping for the best – and we’ve got it. Bermuda has great products, a depth of experience and a unique selling proposition – we have the leading markets in captive, reinsurance and insurance, and they’re located in Bermuda. We are literally a one-stop shop. It’s a winning combination. “

With the theme ‘Give Yourself an Edge’, this year’s RIMS Conference will offer attendees over 100 sessions covering 11 categories, designed to make them better risk managers. Premier Cannonier will attend a number of reinsurance and captive sessions and conduct interviews with local and foreign media including the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of Risk Management Magazine, Dan Reynolds, as well as the Head of Content Provider for Global Risk, Anthony Murtagh.

The Premier will also address attendees at the Bermuda Reception, visit the Bermuda Booth and conduct the traditional Convention walk-about.

Important topics for Conference attendees include ‘insuring intellectual and intangible property risks: critical issues for risk professionals’ and ‘managing cyber risk: how to keep your data safe’

Other highlights of this year’s conference include Simon Sinek, author of Start with why: how great leaders inspire everyone to take action, will be the general session keynote speaker on April 22. His goal is to create a world where the majority of people go home each day feeling fulfilled by their work, and he brings his optimism to inspire action.

  1. Is he different says:

    Question?

IS HIS PRESS SECRETARY AND CHIEF OF STAFF ATTENDING RIMS AS WELL?

Just want to know if we are doing the same thing as plp or are we different are there cost savings?

Can I have an answer please? I hear they both are going?

  2. swing voter says:

oh man I’m vexed, u mean to tell me you’re not over there on a useless political junket? no SUV motorcade, no ‘cannon-nose’ entourage, no 7 star suite, no entertainment budget, no sexy vikki secrets purchases on Govt credit card? Gosh you OBA bies are borin’

  3. Swing on this says:

Leave Cannonier alone you know he has to take Bob & Gibbons. They the real BOSS Man in the party. Dunkley will stay behind and be Premier opps I mean acting.

  4. Common Sense says:

Can “Is he different” please advise on how many countries will be sending their leader to the RIMS conference alone? Do we expect our leader to abandon his duties while attending this conference or does he need to stay in close touch with the country he leads? However, I fully agree that it would be interesting to compare the costs of this trip with the same trip made by our previous leader.

    • Bermyman says:

How many other countries rely on one industry to pretty much drive the entire economy?? That is why Bermuda needs a big presence at these events.

I would rather him be there, this is where Reinsurance and Insurance people network and make decisions. Why would we not want our ministers promoting us as a jurisdiction to potential job makers?

At least Paula is not there with a fruit bowl on her head!

  5. Hmmmmm says:

My beloved OBA friends, which is it? Is it the cost of the trip, who is going with or just the fact that he’s travelling that’s the issue? I can’t keep up. The OBA asked no Parliamentary Questions about travel in its entire time as Opposition. Not one. That was the UBP’s tactic. So, they abandoned the cost argument and the entourage argument early. But they fanned the flames of anti-travel well throughout the campaign and before so that it boiled down to “how dare a PLP Minister or Premier go to the airport”. Carefully examine the travel of Ministers since 20th December 2012. Astonishingly, it is IDENTICAL to the travel of the PLP. Oh how it must make you all squirm to see your guardians of frugality, the “no GP car Brigade” in London, California, Nassau and who knows where else, within the same month.Should the Premier, Richards and Gibbons be at RIMS? Of course they should and they need to do well there. However, maybe in the next election campaign we can talk about adult issues and not get trapped into discussing who went where with whom and why……and for the record, I hope my Premier is staying in a decent hotel and not having to hail a taxi to get to his meetings. Whether I voted for him or not, he is my Premier and he deserves better than what his core supporters seem to want for him; or did that just apply to the PLP? Hmmmmmmm.

      Boom

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

      “Identical”?

Since December 20, where are the trips to China? To Bahrain? To India? To Paris for the Satellite Conference? To Florida to see a rocket launch? To the Bahamas to look at a dock? Where’s the trip to Switzerland along with bar tenders and gombey dancers? Where are the fleets of suv’s and police outriders?

Some travel is necessary, some isn’t.

  6. ABM says:

I remember when former Premier Cox went to this event and all hell broke loose with the comments from her anti-supporters now turned OBA, who said this wasa pointless event and trip and that she shouldn’t even entertain this. Now its their parties leader in charge, and he has attended this event and judging from the lack of comments, this is now fine with them??? Transparency = NONE!

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

I looked back at the comments from reports about RIMS 2012 and 2011, and the comments were mostly saying she (Cox) had to be there, but she wasn’t the best person to represent us. “All hell” did not break loose. They did not say “It’s a pointless event”.

For the most part, people accepted that for Bermuda’s major industry, some representation is appropriate, although there were misgivings about the representation we would have with Cox there.

You guys need to get a grip.

      • ABM says:

Come on, did you read all the comments? Even the ones on the Royal Gazette and Facebook? How about all the nasty things that people were saying on those websites about our then leader when she attended this event? I’m betting that you did not read them all. Even now, I feel our leader, no matter whom it be should be treated with the highest respect. Just to reconfirm, “All Hell” did break loose concerning the nasty and total disrespectful comments made by the public towards our then leader. You’ve gotta read them all buddy.

        • Zombie Apocalypse says:

I did read them all. Did you? For the most part, they were critical of Cox as a representative, but not of her attending the event. In 2011 there were 17 comments about her attending RIMS. In 2012 there were 44 comments on one article, and no comments at all on another article. Not exactly “all hell” breaking loose.

          • Impressive says:

But Cox worked in the Reinsurance Industry in a very important role, Cannonier hasn’t, but Cox didnt bring any value? #Interesting

            • Mad Dawg says:

That isn’t what he was talking about, but don’t let that worry you.

You think she worked in a very important role in reinsurance? Ok buddy.

            • Jim Jones says:

She did not have a ‘very important role’. She was hardly ever there. If she wanted to her job back I doubt they would have her.

  7. Cynic says:

Sorry, but they are all alike. PLP, OBA, UBP equates all the same. This is exactly why so many people were disgusted and chose not to vote. I am sure the Premier was in way over his head at this conference. I can understand sending Mr Richards or Mr Gibbons as they understand finance. If we are cost cutting, why send all three? Send Richards or Gibbons plus an expert in finance who can come back and report what went on in the conference. I’m quite sure that if any of the industry leaders were to ask Premier Cannonier any in depth questions, they would be met with a blank stare. Money is tight, its not about just “representing” at these conferences. Its about going and getting something out of it that will help us, Mr and Mrs Joe Public- NOT just another free trip/vacation for our so called “leaders”.

    • swing voter says:

ya OBA is boring…they should front more like dem otha bies remind me of Eddy Murphy and James Earl Jones in ‘commin to America’

  8. campervan says:

He was in La Trattoria with his family the other night. Very refreshing to see. No entourage of mirror shaded goons, just a low key family supper. Kudos to the new humble prem.

    • Impressive says:

There aren’t too many local politicians more humble than Paula Cox. I admit that Ewart was a great fan of himself, but in no way is Mrs Cox an arrogant, attention seeking person, so I think the reference is very wrong.

      • Jim Jones says:

I can vouch for that. I saw her on more than one occasion doing her own shopping at Lindo’s. I remember thinking “well that’s refreshing, seeing the Premier doing her own shopping”.

then I thought “wait just a GD minute – it’s the middle of the afternoon, on a weekday. Might she have something better to do right now than pick up some eggs and milk?”

So no – maybe she wasn’t arrogant. But her priorities were completely out of whack.

        • Impressive says:

In a weird sort of way, I actually agree,, (you made me lol). However if she had someone else doing it, I guess she would be considered aloof and waisting the tax payer money on her personal shopping.. Go figure ;-)

        • Mad Dawg says:

I well remember Paula Cox canvassing. She went door to door in her chauffeur-driven limo. It was very amusing, but not exactly a display of humility.

  9. Verbal Kint says:

The OBA promised not to travel at all, not to take any pay, to ride Mobylettes to work, and to fix the economy and the Wharf without spending any money or hiring any foreigners. I know ’cause Chris Famous told me. :)

  10. Jim Jones says:

Must have been right after he picked up his own dry cleaning on Bermudiana road. How pretentious of him.
