RobertsFormer Hong Kong chief justice Sir Denys Roberts — who went on to serve as president Bermuda’s court of appeal — has died of kidney failure at his home in Norfolk, England. He was 90.

His wife Fiona and son Henry were at his bedside when he died.

Sir Denys [pictured] considered the 26 years he lived in the former British colony as his “golden years”, the Hong Kong “Standard” newspaper reported on Tuesday [May 21]. He was first posted there as solicitor general in 1962.

A barrister, he was made a Queen’s Counsel in 1964. He was promoted to attorney general in 1966, colonial secretary in 1973 and chief secretary in 1979. Sir Denys was appointed chief justice of the Hong Kong Supreme Court in 1979, the only chief secretary to receive such an appointment.

After retiring in 1988, Sir Denys served as president of the Court of Appeal of Bermuda and chief justice and president of the Court of Appeal of Brunei before finally retiring from the judicial service in 2003.
