Video: Bermuda vs Greenland Penalty Shootout
The Bermuda women’s football team claimed the gold medal in the NatWest Island Games last night [July 18], with the game going down to the wire with a penalty shootout that saw Bermuda’s goalkeeper Stacy Babb make two big saves.
Neither team scored in regulation time, so the match went into overtime, which also ended with a score of 0-0, sending the match into penalties.
Bermuda missed the first penalty, with the ball sailing right over the crossbar. Players from both sides kept converting, until Bermuda’s goalkeeper Stacy Babb made a key save, diving to her right to deny Greenland, and equal up the score.
With the two teams remaining tied with 4 penalties each, the game went into sudden death, which saw Babb make another big save, diving to her right again to block the shot and giving Bermuda the win.
Within seconds the team, and many fans, rushed the field and hugged Babb as the celebrations began as Bermuda claimed one of their two gold medal wins in football.
