Video: Minister’s Cup Match Safety Message

July 31, 2013

Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley spoke about safety during the upcoming Cup Match holiday, and also declared that the “cup will be going back to the west end”

Minister Dunkley said, “”While many of us are not working and enjoying the holiday the BPS and other emergency services are on the job. And for this we should be grateful, but we should also endeavour to make their job easier if possible. So no matter what you choose to do over the holiday please enjoy yourself to the fullest.”

Minister Dunkley’s full statement follows below:

As we are all well aware we are on the eve of the most festive weekend on the Island’s calendar.

Earlier this week the Police informed the public of their plan to keep Bermuda safe over the Cup Match holiday. Their plans are fully supported by the Ministry of Public Safety and I wish to thank those men and women of the Bermuda Police Service and the BPS Reserves for the work they will do over this Holiday.

While many of us are not working and enjoying the holiday the BPS and other emergency services are on the job. And for this we should be grateful, but we should also endeavour to make their job easier if possible.

So no matter what you choose to do over the holiday please enjoy yourself to the fullest; but remember some key points to keep you and your families safe:

  • Please do not drink and drive
  • Do not allow underage drinking, our young people do not need to drink to have fun
  • Exercise courtesy and safety on the water
  • Be courteous and careful on our roads
  • Treat camp sites with care and leave those areas clean
  • Help out our visitors who won’t have experienced anything like these two days before!

Sunday the annual Non-Mariner’s Race will be held so please remember that jet-skis will not be allowed in the area of
Mangrove Bay and there will also be a 5 knot no wake zone imposed in the area.

This change should greatly enhance the safety of everyone who attends and my hope is that the boating public will cooperate with the Police as they enforce this restriction.

Lastly, make sure you have a good view of the ferry back to Somerset on Friday evening as it will be carrying the Cup. Even though my colleague Shawn Crockwell, the Minister of Tourism and Transport, is a St George’s fan I do not anticipate any unexpected ferry work stoppages.

Happy Cup Match to all and above all, be safe.

Thank you.
