26-Yr-Old Denies Importing Prohibited Weapon

September 17, 2013

A 26-year-old man pleaded not guilty to importing parts of a BB gun in Magistrates Court this morning [Sept 17].

Devonne Hodgson, 26, was granted bail of $5,000 after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of importing a prohibited weapon – a BB gun.

The BB gun — said to be stripped down but with the trigger mechanism missing — was alleged to have been found in Hodgson’s luggage after he he got off a BA flight from the UK in August 2013.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner set trial for 6th December and required Hodgson to wear an Electronic Monitoring Device which confined him to his residence from 9:00pm to 6:00am every night until his trial date.

Good grief, a BB gun! A gun that can be found in the toy, or at the very least on the shelf in the sporting section of Walmart. A gun that would have a tough time killing a rat at very close range. A gun that is so harmless it is treated as a toy. A gun that, in the la la land that is Bermuda, is treated as if it was an AK47, the weapon of choice for terrorists.

I have a bb pellet still buried deep in my thigh from when my brother and I were dumb teenagers playing around and shooting each other. They are not harmless. They are powerfull enough to shoot car windows out from a distance. You could kill somebody with a shot to the heart or neck with a pump action bb gun or one with a full Co2 cartridge. You can definitely take out an eye. It is actuall considered a hand gun in some states. Cheese and rice. Let me shoot you with one and and you will know how harmless a bb gun isn’t.

Fire it at someone’s face and you could do some damage. It’s illegal, and he knew it.

Triangle Drifter, I lived in the United States for most of my childhood. When I was thirteen, my neighbor/best friend was shot in the eye with a BB gun by his older brother. He lost the vision in that eye and only has partial vision in the other eye. So you are totally incorrect, they are not harmless at all.

@Triangle Drifter, whether a BB guy can be purchased at Walmart is besides the point. They are prohibited here, hence he is charged with breaking the law. You may be of the opinion that they are harmless, but the fact remains that they are illegal. You can walk in off the streets in many places and buy a weapon with relative ease, so does that make it ok with you? Does the fact that one can buy a BB gun off the shelf in the US give him a legal defense? The fact remains that we are not the US, they are illegal here and if you feel they shouldn’t be then lobby your MP to change the laws in “la la land.”

FYI: People HAVE been killed or seriously maimed in the past by BB guns in the US.
