BEST Invites Volunteers For Southlands Cleanup
A local environmental group is calling for volunteers to help in a big clean-up at Southlands on South Shore Road in Warwick, which is set to become Bermuda’s newest national park.
BEST has joined forces with Government’s Department of Conservation Services to have a three-day clear-up at Southlands on Monday October 21, Tuesday October 22 and Wednesday October 23, from noon to 5pm every day.
The group is hoping that companies on the Island will adopt the project and let staff join in the event, which will help improve one of most special pieces of land left on the Island. BEST hopes volunteers will turn up in their droves even if it just to support the initiative for an hour and is also asking for support from landscape companies.
A BEST spokeswoman said, “This is a joint event between BEST and Conservation Services, which will be providing the expertise, management and equipment for the effort.
“We are hoping to encourage as many businesses as possible to send out their staff on the ‘spruce-up’ days to help us restore the property. We are also inviting landscaping companies to donate equipment and their workers’ time to help.”
She added, “This is such an amazing piece of land that can be a true treasure for Bermuda and we are hoping that as many people as possible help in any way they can in order to make this area something to be proud of for generations to come.”
As well as the three-day clean-up there will also be an Open House on Saturday, October 26, to show the public what the potential is of the property and what is in store for them when it is finally opened as a public park. The open house will include tours of the property by David Wingate.
Other NGO’s are also being invited to set up stands around the main house to showcase their organisations during the open house and BEST will be selling T-shirts, ‘Celebrating Southlands’, that have been sponsored by Gorhams.
At 4pm on October 26 there will be a beach party and bonfire at Southlands Beach with live entertainment.
