Minister Scott On Diabetes Awareness Month

November 1, 2013

Minister Wayne Scott presented opening remarks at the Diabetes Awareness Month Proclamation Ceremony, which was held today [Nov 1] at City Hall in Hamilton, and organised by Bermuda Diabetes Association.

Minister Scott said, “Today we join with the rest of the world in marking November as Diabetes Awareness Month.

“Diabetes affects all countries, and it’s predicted that the currently 371million who have diabetes worldwide will grow to 552 million by 2030. The World Health Organization’s Diabetes Programme has adopted as their mission to prevent diabetes whenever possible and, where not possible, to minimize complications and maximize quality of life.

“The prevalence of diabetes in our community has grave consequences and affects so many lives and families. From the very young to our seniors, Bermuda has not been spared from the escalation of this illness.

“We can, however, help the Bermuda Diabetes Association in raising awareness of diabetes as public health problem in our country. This month we have opportunity to get involved in in life-saving efforts to prevent diabetes.

“We know that education and awareness are the most important to eradication the disease. We also know that if we adopt a healthier lifestyle, we can prevent the further spread of the disease.

“There is good evidence that a large proportion of cases of diabetes and its complications can be prevented by a healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco.

“So today, I encourage all residents to become advocates for improving the overall health our community. We can make a difference if we individually and collectively make a commitment to focus on healthy living.

“Use this month to learn more about diabetes, become knowledgeable about the symptoms of the disease and then get on board with making some healthier lifestyle changes.

“We can, like the World Health Organization mission, minimize the complications of this disease and maximize the quality of our lives,” concluded Minister Scott.

Cannabis has been shown to reduce the chances of diabetes.

We really need to legalize it for medicine here… diabetes is far worse than any harm that cannabis can cause.

I am totally amazed when “Smoke and Mirror” politicians take on projects which are far removed from from the real business of the day ” The Economy ” in a vain attempt to convince us that they are actually doing something.

Where is Minister without Portfolio Lea Scott? I thought she was acting for the real Health Minister!!!

Wayne Scott already has enough on his plate. There is a lot lacking in his Ministry.

Is Lea being paid to act as if? She read her “maiden speech” almost a year after being in power. And she got away with it. She is one of the weakest links in the OBA But she gets away with it. Really – what is going on here! Who is this person. Who gets away with a whole lot – and why does she?
