“Event organizers are delighted to have Ironshore as the presenting sponsor for Bermuda’s first annual Relay for Life event,” says Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre Tara Soares.

“The 24 hour event will begin at 6.00pm on Friday, May 30, with members of local fundraising teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns doing laps around the track at National Stadium’s North Field for a full 24 hours, concluding at 6.00pm on Saturday, May 31. Each team member is being asked to raise $100 to participate to support cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.

“95 percent of funds raised during the Relay will remain in Bermuda to support Bermuda Cancer and Health in their efforts to cover the costs of cancer screening tests for those who cannot afford it, improve access to cancer treatment in Bermuda, deliver education and awareness programmes to assist with cancer prevention and early detection, and help guide patients through their cancer care journeys through the Cancer Information System.

“Five percent of funds raised locally will be donated to the American Cancer Society to help fund their cancer research, prevention, and care programmes.

Tara Soares, Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health said, “We are excited to bring this important community event to Bermuda for the first time. Each of us in Bermuda has been touched by cancer, either personally or through knowing a friend, colleague or family member who has been diagnosed with some form of cancer.

“In 2012, 236 people in Bermuda heard the diagnosis ‘you have cancer’ and 82 people died from it. Those numbers could be lowered through better education and access to treatment, and that’s what the Relay is about. It is a fun way for all of us to get involved and do our part to remember those we’ve lost, celebrate our survival and recovery stories, and help fight back against this terrible disease.”

“Relay For Life is a family-friendly community event, during which participants will picnic, camp out and, when not taking their turns around the track, enjoy organised games and on-stage entertainment. All Relay participants who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a commemorative t-shirt.

“Teams can register by May 15 by visiting online or by calling Bermuda Cancer and Health on 236 1001.”
