Actress Plans To Raise $30,000 For Charity

April 30, 2014

In celebration of her 30th birthday and with the aim of raising money for charity, local actress Nishanthi J. Bailey will be presenting a one-woman production of “Chain,” a play written by Pearl Cleage.

Ms. Bailey said, “2013 was a pivotal year of reflection as I thought about approaching my 30th birthday this year. I began to create a bucket list, reflect on my contributions, accomplishments, opportunities that I have benefited from, and the experiences that I have been exposed to.

“My final conclusion was that I have been blessed. I contemplated on how I was going to commemorate my birthday and knew that I wanted to accomplish one of the items on the bucket list. Additionally, I wanted to give back in a way that is significant and special to me that the wider community has been in support of over the years; my life in the theatre.”

Her overseas credits include award winning performances that garnered her an international accolade as the first actress to win the “Best Female Actress” award in 2007 at the Annual Ruby Awards in Atlanta, GA.

Branching from the “on-stage” scene, she is the founding Director and Producer of youth theatrical company, TROIKA. During her time with the company, she orchestrated the organization’s first two productions, “Ammunition” and H.I.S.T.O.R.Y.”

Currently, Ms. Bailey is the Theatre and Drama teacher at Dellwood Middle School, the Deputy Chair on the Bermuda Arts Council, and has been a representative on the Teen Services Outstanding Teen Awards Performing Arts Committee for six years. Although she has explored many facets of the theatrical world as a producer, stage manager, and director, her first love is performing on the stage.

About the play, a spokesperson said, “Rosa Jenkins is a 16-year-old crack addict living with her parents in Harlem. Rosa’s father has chained her to a radiator in their apartment to cure her after rehabilitation has failed.

“A period of seven days lapses, during which time Rosa – in a monologue to the audience – rages, goes through the effects of withdrawal and, finally, voices her clear-headed thoughts about herself, her parents, and her friend who got her hooked.”

“Chain” will be presented exclusively at the Daylesford Theatre on Washington Street in Hamilton, located behind City Hall, beginning at 7.00pm each night from May 21 through May 24, 2014.
